The researchers also noted that there is a positive correlation between an athlete's form of combat and have better physical fitness and aesthetics, with direct effects on reproductive success. They attributed this fact to the high cost involved to become an elite athlete: an investment of time, money and health. Moreover, there is also a relevant social cost (for example, the defeat). The final study stating that the practice of fighting could be a sign of quality used by females (or their parents) to choose their mating partners. The social or biological pathway responsible for these mating patterns still needs to be better explained. There was an additional effect of prestige by being a fighter, facilitating access to friends and women. The number of women appeared to be the main factor that leads to an increase in the number of children, suggesting that the "prestige" would provide greater access to reproductive partners. The high number of children descended directly from the fighters, was mainly due to the greater number of wives as compared to subjects related to other professional activities. Furthermore, the results of interviews of women in that country revealed that, in their preferences, the ability to fight and wealth were important criteria for the choice of husband. Another possible explanation offered by researchers for the mating success by being a fighter, is that the selection may be acting through female choice, but by competition between males: the prestige acquired by the fighters can persuade other men to compete by the same female. Atletas são mais atraentes para as mulheres?

Um estudo polêmico foi publicado recentemente, alertando para o fato de que ser lutador aumenta o prestígio do indivíduo e, consequentemente, atrai mais o sexo oposto. Para afirmar isso, os pesquisadores estudaram lutadores africanos, pois sofriam menos interferências externas competitivas que poderiam influenciar a escolha feminina. Além disso, havia a possibilidade de correlacionar esse fato com o número de mulheres e filhos, pois no país onde realizaram a pesquisa, o indivíduo podia ser casado com quantas mulheres conquistasse (poligamia).

Em outros estudos, foi verificado que homens mais ricos são mais propensos a ser poligâmicos e ter mais filhos. A importância do status sócio-econômico para o acesso aos companheiros já foi observado em muitas sociedades tradicionais e industrializadas. No entanto, esse estudo foi o primeiro a mostrar que lutadores tinham muito mais filhos do que outros homens.

Os pesquisadores observaram também, que há uma correlação positiva em ser atleta de modalidade de combate e possuir melhor aptidão física e estética, com efeitos diretos sobre o sucesso reprodutivo. Também verificaram que a proporção de lutadores, em geral, na população masculina era baixa. Atribuíram esse fato ao alto custo envolvido para tornar-se atleta de elite: investimento de tempo, dinheiro e saúde. Além disso, há também um custo social relevante (por exemplo, o da derrota).

Concluíram o estudo afirmando que a prática de lutas poderia representar um sinal de qualidade utilizado pelas fêmeas (ou seus pais) ao escolher seus parceiros de acasalamento. A via biológica ou social responsável por esses padrões de acasalamento ainda precisa ser melhor explicada. Havia um efeito adicional de prestígio pelo fato de ser lutador, facilitando o acesso às amizades e às mulheres. O número de mulheres pareceu ser o principal fator que leva a um aumento do número de crianças, sugerindo que o "prestígio" poderia fornecer um maior acesso às parceiras reprodutivas.

O elevado número de crianças descendendo diretamente dos lutadores, foi em função principalmente do maior número de esposas quando comparados a indivíduos relacionados a outras atividades profissionais. Além disso, os resultados das entrevistas das mulheres daquele país revelou que, em suas preferências, a capacidade de luta e riqueza eram critérios importantes para a escolha do marido. Outra possível explicação apresentada pelos pesquisadores para o sucesso no acasalamento pelo fato de ser lutador, é que a seleção pode não estar agindo por meio de escolhas femininas, mas sim pela competição entre os machos: o prestígio adquirido pelos lutadores pode dissuadir outros homens de concorrer pela mesma fêmea.
