A historic night in Las Vegas. For the first time in the history of the UFC, two unbeaten fighters competed in the event the belt and for the joy of the Brazilian fans, the title came to Brazil. Uma noite histórica em Las Vegas. Pela primeira vez na história do UFC, dois lutadores invictos disputaram o cinturão do evento e, para a alegria dos fãs brasileiros, o titulo veio para o Brasil. Diante do campeão Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida deu uma aula de trocação. Levando o adversário ao chão logo no primeiro assalto, mas o desfecho da grande festa ficou para o segundo round.

Nos primeiros minutos, Rashad partiu para cima, sentindo a necessidade de mudar sua estratégia porque, por pontos, não poderia vencer Lyoto. E tudo saiu como o brasileiro esperava. Assim que o americano partiu para cima, Machida deu novamente uma aula de contra-golpe, acertando potentes cruzados e diretos, que derrubaram o então campeão, inconsciente, com menos de quatro minutos de luta. “Espero manter esse cinturão comigo por muito tempo”, garantiu Lyoto, após receber seu objeto de desejo das mãos do patrão, ao lado dos familiares, que fizeram a festa verde-e-amarela no octagon.

No duelo dos ex-campeões Matt Hughes e Matt Serra, deu Hughes. Numa grande luta, Serra chegou a dominar o primeiro round, aplicando um knockdown no adversário, mas parou por aí. Nos rounds seguintes, Hughes usou sua experiência para travar o adversário num eficiente jogo de Wrestling, frustrando o Serra e levando a vitória na decisão dos juizes.

Depois de duas lutas indo para a decisão dos juizes, nas vitórias de Frank Edgar e Chael Sonnen, o americano Drew McFedries enlouqueceu o público com um verdadeiro atropelo. Contra o duro Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Drew precisou de apenas 37 segundos para aplicar dois knockdowns e castigar o adversário, forçando o juiz a interromper o combate.

Nas lutas preliminares, destaque para Krzysztof Soszynski. Depois de lutar no UFC 97, o casca-grossa aceitou o desafio de lutar novamente na edição seguinte e não deu chances para o brasileiro André Gusmão. Dominando o primeiro round, Soszynski forçou o juiz a interromper o combate com pouco mais de três minutos. Nas outras lutas, um show de finalização, com as rápidas vitórias de Patrick Barry, Yoshiyuki Yoshida e Brock Larson.
