Trip sees first-hand and publish images of unpublished documentary about the guts of the Gracie family

Ryan não olha a câmera. Mira o vazio fixamente, como se a pupila estivesse dilatada, sem ver nada. “Eu já bati em muita gente, ainda mais no Rio. E ninguém tem coragem de fazer alguma coisa, pois a família é muito importante. Vai matar? Vai querer me foder, vai se foder depois. Todo mundo tem pai, tem filho, tem mãe. Tira um filho meu, que eu tiro dois teus e talvez a mãe também.” Só a sonoridade do nome do protagonista da cena já remete ao clã que virou sinônimo de jiu-jítsu no mundo: Gracie. Não é esse, no entanto, o primeiro depoimento do documentário The Gracies and the Birth of Vale Tudo [Os Gracie e o nascimento do vale-tudo] dirigido pelo paulistano radicado em Nova York Victor Cesar Bota. O filme começa com Robson definindo o jeito de ser dos Gracie: “Somos educadíssimos, gentis, só não pode aporrinhar. Não somos violentos. Somos perigosos”.

Trip assistiu com exclusividade (e gostou do que viu) ao filme que reconstrói os pilares da saga iniciada por Carlos Gracie, em Belém do Pará, nos idos de 1916. Foi nessa época que Carlos teve as primeiras aulas com o japonês Mitsuyo Esai Maeda. Imagens inéditas mostram como os golpes ali aprendidos culminaram em eventos de vale-tudo, como o UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), que hoje movimentam bilhões de dólares. Elas também contam como Carlos criou a dieta vegetariana, como difundiu o açaí no Rio de Janeiro e o porquê da predileção por nomes iniciados com erre. “Aqui nos Estados Unidos e no Japão eles são heróis, mas no Brasil ainda carregam a fama de vilões, de arruaceiros”, compara o diretor da produção, que deve estrear por aqui e nos EUA entre agosto e setembro deste ano.

Carlos foi o responsável pelo traslado do jiu-jítsu de Belém para o Rio em 1925, onde abriu uma academia com foco nos ensinamentos de autodefesa. “[Como meu pai era muito franzino], falavam que aquele esporte não valia nada numa briga de rua. Então, ele inventou um evento em que vale tudo, morder, dedo no olho, o que for, sem regra.”, explica Carlinhos, 11º filho de Carlos. O patriarca teve 21 filhos com seis mulheres: “Ele não construiu uma família, e sim um exército”, comenta Renzo.

A partir de 2004, Victor saiu à caça da história de vida dos homens que definiram o rumo da família até 1997 – ano que o diretor considera como o do retorno do jiu-jítsu ao Japão. Ele destrincha por que Carlos, Rolls e Renzo formam a espinha dorsal da evolução do esporte e os motivos que levaram os holofotes da mídia para o tripé Hélio-Rickson-Royce. Entrevistou 15 Gracie em baterias de duas horas. Esbarrou em questões delicadas, percebeu rixas que criaram facções. Victor mostra os fatos que não permitem o uso do adjetivo “unida” para a família.

A escolha do tema surgiu por acaso. O diretor jantava com um amigo em Nova York, ainda no bafo do término do trabalho mais recente – o curta Freeman, feito com a produtora O2. Então pintou um terceiro camarada com o papo de que estava cansado do treino na badalada academia de Renzo Gracie, instrutor requisitado até por autoridades do mundo árabe. Pronto: imagine aquele desenho de lâmpada sobre a cabeça de Victor. A ideia de um filme sobre a família foi imediata. Na hora, o paulistano recordou os bons tempos que viveu no Rio. Pegou onda com Ryan e Ralf no Quebra-mar dos 12 aos 15 anos.

“Íamos para a matinê do Mistura Fina. Se dava algum problema, sempre iam buscar o Renzo na casa dele para resolver. Ele aparecia de pijama para proteger a turma”, diz Victor. É dessa fase uma das imagens de arquivo pessoal dos Gracie exibidas no documentário que mostra o nível de envolvimento da família com o jiu-jítsu. Os pais de Renzo se divorciaram e deixaram a casa para o filho, então com 17 anos. Ele forrou a sala com tatames e transformou a residência numa espécie de tribunal, onde as rivalidades do bairro eram resolvidas nos conformes do jiu-jítsu. Também causam forte impacto as imagens de uma luta que a família Gracie armou no quintal de casa. As imagens caseiras são dos anos 90 e mostram Ryan lutando com Tito, aluno da academia de Carlson, nos fundos de uma residência, cenário clássico de um churrascão de domingo. A certa altura, eles se pegam, trocam alguns golpes e caem no azulejo do quintal – para delírio do pessoal. “Abre pra câmera! Abre pra câmera.” Tito reclama que Ryan está mordendo sua orelha, que sangra em abundância. “Deixa!”, alguém grita. “Enfia o dedo!”, outro sugere. Em 2007, Ryan foi encontrado morto aos 33 anos numa cela do 91º DP de São Paulo, um dia após ter sido preso, acusado de furto de um carro e da tentativa do roubo de uma moto, em meio a uma alucinação provocada por drogas.

Hélio (de bigode) sempre lutando

História registrada
As sequências que mostram a intimidade do que acontece longe dos ringues são muito bem amarradas com registros históricos da carreira esportiva dos ases da família. Por exemplo, a primeira luta de Hélio Gracie, organizada pelo irmão Carlos em 1932. Adversário: o boxer Antonio Portugal. Hélio venceu em menos de 30s. Só o duelo seguinte, porém, entrou nos registros como a primeira luta de vale-tudo: Hélio contra o californiano Fred Ebert. Após duas horas de intenso combate, a luta foi interrompida pela polícia, pois não poderia passar das duas da madrugada. Empate. “Aí, fiquei famoso”, resume o próprio Hélio, morto no dia 29 de janeiro último, aos 95 anos, em Petrópolis (RJ).

Não menos memoráveis são as cenas de Hélio lutando com Kato, em 1951, japonês que acabou nocauteado. Seu conterrâneo Kimura tomou suas dores e desafiou Hélio, que, claro, não negou fogo. Bem mais pesado, Kimura atacou o brasileiro até quebrar o braço dele. Do corner, Carlos percebeu que o irmão continuaria no ringue, então achou melhor jogar a toalha e evitar prejuízo maior. “Ele ganhou a luta, mas não me venceu”, concluiu Hélio.

A trajetória de Rolls, único filho de Carlos com Claudia, também é contada desde os seus primeiros anos de vida. A começar pela rivalidade com Rorion, o primogênito dos nove filhos de Hélio. Carlinhos, primogênito de Carlos com Layr, analisa a linha do jiu-jítsu de Rolls e de Rorion: “Rorion estagnou no que o tio Hélio ensinou. Rolls foi além, treinava cada vez mais, só pensava nisso”.

Além de introduzir pitadas inéditas de agressividade no jiu-jítsu, Rolls flertou com outras técnicas e foi campeão brasileiro de luta olímpica em 1978. Quando Bruce Lee levou o caratê à pauta do dia na década de 70, Rolls fez logo questão de confrontá-lo para mostrar que ele não tinha chance contra o jiu-jítsu – e não teve mesmo. No surf, não havia onda grande que o intimidasse. No voo livre, não era tempo ruim que o segurava no chão. Queria provar que não tinha medo de nada – até morrer prematuramente, aos 31 anos, em um acidente de asa-delta. Fez parte da obra de Rolls treinar o jovem Rickson.

Já o destino de Rorion foi levar a arte dos Gracie para a Califórnia. Conexões o transformaram em coreógrafo de luta para Mel Gibson em Máquina mortífera (1987). Chuck Norris também se impressionou com o poder do jiu-jítsu em O herói e o terror (1988). Rorion tentou proibir que outros integrantes da família usassem o logotipo triangular e o nome Gracie para batizar academias. O caso foi parar na Justiça americana, e seu primo Carley, filho de Carlos, arcou com uma multa superior a US$ 700 mil. Rilion, outro filho de Carlos, não assina embaixo das atitudes de Rorion: “Em seu lugar, não teria feito coisas que ele fez, ele poderia ter usado a família de outro jeito”. Rorion criou o UFC e trabalhou com o irmão Rickson. O Gracie escolhido para brilhar nesse campeonato, contudo, foi Royce, terceiro filho de Hélio com Vera.

Rickson foi para o Japão, onde virou lenda viva do Pride e escreveu parte da sua invencibilidade de 460 lutas. Com ele, o jiu-jítsu retornou ao Japão depois de ser azeitado pelos Gracie por oito décadas. E pensar que tudo começou com Esai Maeda, que domou o encrenqueiro Carlos, moleque que vivia jogando pedras nos vizinhos e mangas podres nos chineses que trabalhavam na lavanderia. O mesmo menino que treinou seus chutes até conseguir nocautear o cachorro da vizinha – o último empecilho na hora de pular o muro e fugir de casa para escapar dos castigos impostos pelos pais.
