The only Gracie to fight three generations inside the mats, Royler has one of the most respected histories in the Jiu-Jitsu. Besides the four world titles in the BJJ, three ADCC titles, being elected two times the most technical athlete in the competition, Helio Gracie’s son made history in MMA, where he defended his family’s name in remarkable moments, like the two fights against Eugênio Tadeu and the historical fight against Sakuraba, at Pride.
After 25 years splitting his life between the Academia Gracie’s classes and the competitions, Royler, 43, decided to move to San Diego, in California, with the wife and the youngest of his four daughters. The Paredão below is a result of hours of chat in Art of War back stages, in China. In the opportunity, Royler spoke about the new life, remembered the most remarkable moments in the career and analyzed the future of the gentle art and MMA.
Why you decided to move to the US?
I love Brazil, I’m one of the last Mohicans to leave Brazil. Eighteen years ago, I lived in Los Angeles for a year, but didn’t like the life style and decided to move back.
