Ataíde Júnior, Black belt and leader of Constrictor Team, is smiling from ear to ear with the development of his athletes. Talking to TATAME, Ataíde talked about the last fight of Paulo, against Jacob Volkmann, the future of the athlete, who’s chosen to face Josh Koscheck in 2010, and the team in Brasília.
What did you thought about the fight?
I thought it was hard, though, where Paulo lost some important positions, maybe because of the opponent’s skills or because we didn’t train that a lot to those situations. On the first round he put himself well, keeping the wrestler away, on clinch time he got two good drops and on the final moments of the round, a knockdown. On the second, Jacob came stronger, with good positions to a Wrestling, keeping Paulo down for some moments, but Paulo dominated all the round.
On the last round, Paulo was more tired… It was a war, he fell in bad positions, but he was leaving, handling with race and finished the round punching over. To the conditions of train that we have, the place that we train, the total lack of government support and lack of sponsors… In all the ways, to athlete’s training, Paulo was brilliant and could overcome all this problems and now he’s hired from the biggest event of the world.
To criticize and to judge a Brazilian athlete that pass by needs, humiliations and unnecessary critics and even though can win a fight is coward, and I thought the fight beautiful. Paulo overcame himself once again, showed race, his body were better and he’s adapting to the show, he has an open mind. He’s very critical about his performance and he knows that he still has a long way to run.
And what about Paulo’s future in the event?
Paulo entered on UFC pushed up for a brilliant performance on Jungle Fight, with a card of 11-0, debuting on UFC 95 with a Top 5 of category and was good to him, knocking out on the first round, wining the knock out of the night. On UFC 100, biggest of the history, Paulo made a fight with other Top 5, Jon Fitch, and lost, but he went out with the head up. On UFC 106, he faced a wrestler of the first American division, debuting on UFC, with a card 9-0, and Paulo won for unanimous decision. UFC is the biggest MMA event of the world, where the biggest and richest teams of the world compete. It’s a structure that we weren’t used to, but we’re adapting as we can. We’re a team from fifth division playing on the first, and that’s good to us, because we’re there and we have to win, if we lose, we’re out! Paulo is a beginner inside the show and I think he will stay in for a long time!
How is Constrictor Team?
I’m student of the great master Armando Wriedt, who were student of the great master Hélio Gracie, and I had a closed doors formation, where master Armando passed many techniques of Gracie school, focusing the MMA and self defense. The change of focus from Jiu-Jitsu to MMA happened, at first, because of an unhappiness on out team with picks’ acting that moved to Brasília and took the Jiu-Jitsu Federation, generalizing the sport and planting a bad seed inside fight, losing many athletes of city with potential to be champions.
With that, MMA became a natural evolution inside our work and with a lot of train and dedication we’re seeing the results. Constrictor Team came to define our fight style, which started to be used and worked on our team’s trains. I’m Herpetologist and I always admired snakes, so, observing the moves and the power of these reptiles, I saw that the way that they catch their chases is very close to Jiu-Jitsu’s style practiced for us. So, I started to focus my classes on pressure and putting positions getting a more efficient game to MMA.
We’re a small team from Brasília, without much structure to train, few materials, without cage and ring, but we have a great difference, we have identity and the will to win, based on team’s union and everyone’s help. We have two athletes between the Top 10 of the world, one of UFC and other on WEC, besides many others on the team, also with a lot of potential, that inspires on this two and are coming with all also looking for their highlight spot.

Ataíde Júnior, faixa-preta e líder da Constrictor Team, está sorrindo à toa com o desempenho dos seus atletas. Após a vitória de Paulo Thiago no UFC 106, o foco volta para Rani Yahya, que entrará no octagon do WEC na próxima semana. Em conversa com a TATAME, Ataíde falou sobre a última luta de Paulo, contra Jacob Volkmann, o futuro do atleta, que está escalado para enfrentar Josh Koscheck em 2010, e a equipe em Brasília.
O que achou da luta do Paulo Thiago?
Achei a luta difícil, bem dura, onde o Paulo perdeu algumas posições importantes, talvez pela habilidade do oponente, ou por falta de treino nosso para aquelas situações específicas. No primeiro round, ele se posicionou muito bem, conseguindo manter o wrestler distante, na hora do clinch conseguiu duas boas quedas e nos instantes finais do round um knockdown. No segundo, Jacob veio mais forte, com boas posições para um Wrestiling, conseguindo manter Paulo por alguns momentos no chão, só que o Paulo dominou todo o round.
No último round, o Paulo já estava mais cansado... Foi uma guerra, caiu em posições ruins, mas foi saindo, se virando e na raça terminou o round socando por cima. Para as condições de treinamento que temos, pelo local em que treinamos, pela total falta de apoio do governo e pela sempre falta de patrocínio, que possibilitasse melhores condições... Em todos os sentidos, para o treinamento do atleta, o Paulo foi brilhante e conseguiu superar todos esses problemas e hoje é contratado do maior evento do mundo.
Criticar ou julgar um atleta brasileiro que passa por necessidades, humilhações e críticas desnecessárias e ainda assim consegue vencer é uma covardia, mas a bem da verdade, eu, particularmente, achei a luta linda. O Paulo se superou mais uma vez, mostrou muita raça, uma melhora corporal incrível e está se adaptando ao show, tem a cabeça aberta e no lugar. É muito crítico quanto à sua performance e sabe que ainda tem um grande caminho a percorrer.
O que você espera para o futuro do Paulo no UFC?
Paulo entrou no UFC alavancado por uma brilhante passagem pelo Jungle Fight, com um cartel de 11-0, fazendo sua estréia no UFC 95 com um Top 5 da categoria e se deu bem, nocauteando no primeiro round, ganhando o nocaute da noite. No UFC 100, maior da história, Paulo fez uma luta com outro Top 5, Jon Fitch, onde perdeu, mas conseguiu travar o ímpeto de Fitch, saindo de cara limpa. No UFC 106, enfrentou um wrestler da primeira divisão americana, debutante no UFC, com cartel 9-0, e o Paulo ganhou por unanimidade.
O UFC é o maior evento de MMA do mundo, onde as maiores e mais ricas equipes do mundo competem. É uma estrutura que não estávamos acostumados, mas estamos nos adaptando na medida do possível. Somos um time da quinta divisão jogando na primeira divisão, e isso só nos favorece, pois estamos lá e temos que vencer, se perder, está fora! Paulo é um novato dentro do show e acho que vai ficar por muito tempo!
Como está a Constrictor Team?
Sou aluno do grande mestre Armando Wriedt, que por sua vez foi aluno do grande mestre Hélio Gracie, e tive uma formação a portas fechadas, na qual o mestre Armando passava várias técnicas e manhas da escola Gracie, com ênfase a vale-tudo e defesa pessoal. A mudança de foco do Jiu-Jitsu para o MMA aconteceu, num primeiro momento, em razão do descontentamento da nossa equipe com a atuação de picaretas que migraram para Brasília e se apossaram das Federações de Jiu-Jitsu, banalizando o esporte e plantando uma semente de discórdia no meio da luta, perdendo com isso vários atletas da cidade com potencial para serem campeões.
Com isso, o MMA acabou sendo uma evolução natural dentro do nosso trabalho e com muito treino e dedicação estamos colhendo os frutos. A Constrictor Team surgiu para definir o nosso estilo de luta, que passou a ser utilizado e aprimorado nos treinos de nossa equipe. Sou Herpetólogo e sempre tive muita admiração pelas serpentes, então, observando os movimentos e a potência de constrição destes répteis, vi que a forma com que elas capturam suas presas é muito próxima ao estilo do Jiu-Iitsu praticada por nós. Então, passei a focar minhas aulas na pressão e colocação das posições, conseguindo um jogo muito eficiente para o MMA.
Somos uma equipe pequena de Brasília, sem grande estrutura de treinamento, com material restrito, sem cage, sem ringue, mas temos um grande diferencial que é a identidade própria e a vontade de vencer, pautado sempre na união da equipe e na ajuda recíproca entre todos. Temos dois atletas entre os TOP 10 do mundo, um no UFC e outro no WEC, além de vários outros da equipe, também com muito potencial, que se espelham nesses dois e vêm na cola com força total procurando também o seu lugar de destaque.
