Cunha: “Fedor still is the number one”

Sérgio Cunha helped Brett Rogers’ preparation to face the Russian Fedor Emelianenko, but he saw the American be knocked out on the second round. Besides the loss, the Muay Thai coach liked the athlete’s performance.

“He went very well on the first round, fought with the strategy I made, but he went out of the strategy on the second round and was knocked out by the best fighter of the world, that’s normal”, lamented Cunha, talking about the fight.

“He moved well, broke Fedor’s nose, could block the takedowns and, when he fell, he quickly went out e got on top, hitting three good punches and defending an arm-lock... I just think that he came back too open on the second round and didn’t moved well... If he follows (the strategy) he could finish the fight. But Fedor is still the number one”, pointed the coach, who worked for six months with the American heavyweight.

In some MMA forums, some fan criticized the referee Big John McCarty about a possible early stoppage. To Cunha, the referee was right. “The punch hit right on him and he did right... If he left, Brett would have been hit two or three times more with Fedor over him. He couldn’t do anything, he was dizzy and the referee was right”, said Sérgio, without plans to the future. “I work with camps and I still don’t know when it’s gonna be the next... Probably I’ll take a ride in Brazil and then I’ll come back here”, finished.

Sérgio Cunha ajudou na preparação de Brett Rogers para enfrentar o russo Fedor Emelianenko, mas viu o americano ser nocauteado no segundo round. Apesar da derrota, o treinador gostou da performance do atleta. “Ele foi muito bem no primeiro round, lutou com a estratégia que eu preparei, mas no segundo saiu da estratégia e foi nocauteado pelo melhor lutador do mundo, uma coisa que é normal”, lamentou Cunha, comentando a luta.

“Ele conseguiu se movimentar bem, quebrou o nariz do Fedor, conseguiu bloquear as quedas e, quando caiu, saiu rápido e ficou por cima, acertando três bons socos e defendendo o arm-lock... Eu só acho que ele deu mole de voltar muito aberto no segundo e não se movimentar... Se ele seguisse à risca (a estratégia), poderia ter chance de acabar com a luta. Mas o Fedor continua sendo o número um”, aponta o treinador, que trabalhou por seis meses com o peso pesado americano.

Em alguns fóruns de MMA, fãs criticaram o árbitro Big John McCarty, que teria parado a luta precipitadamente. Para Cunha, o experiente árbitro foi correto. “O soco pegou muito em cheio e ele agiu bem... Se ele deixasse, o Brett ia tomar mais dois ou três socos com o Fedor por cima. Ele não teria condições de fazer mais nada, ele estava tonto e o árbitro agiu corretamente”, disse Sérgio, sem planos para o futuro. “Eu trabalho com camps e ainda não sei qual vai ser o próximo... Provavelmente vou dar um passeio no Brasil e depois volto para cá”, finalizou.
