O americano Luis Carreno começou a praticar Jiu-Jitsu com Amaury Bitteti na Flórida, Estados Unidos, e mais tarde passou a treinar com o brasileiro Christiano Bertolucci, em Nova Iorque. Com a faixa roxa na cintura, Luis está focado em um trabalho especial na Colômbia. Numa entrevista exclusiva à TATAME, o gringo falou sobre o trabalho de inclusão da arte suave no exército colombiano, a ação social com o Jiu-Jitsu no nosso vizinho sul-americano e muito mais.

Como você começou a trabalhar com o Jiu-Jitsu na Colômbia?

Me mudei para a Colômbia em outubro de 2009 e comecei a introduzir o Jiu-Jitsu na forma de seminários em diferentes escolas de artes marciais. Desde 2009, fiz mais de 20 seminários em grandes cidades como Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Burrancabermeja, Armenia, Tunja e Valledupar. Até hoje, a Team Legacy Jiu-Jitsu está com quatro grupos, e nosso objetivo é fechar o ano com oito escolas de Jiu-Jitsu.

Qual foi a maior dificuldade quando você começou a trabalhar na Colômbia?

Acho que o mais difícil foi conseguir patrocinadores que apoiassem nossa atividade pioneira e projetos sociais. Como o Jiu-Jitsu é um esporte novo na Colômbia, estamos mostrando ao público em geral com exibições, cursos e torneios para mostrar ao povo colombiano os benefícios de praticar a arte suave.

Como era o Jiu-Jitsu colombiano antes da sua chegada?

Quando eu cheguei à Colômbia praticamente não existia Jiu-Jitsu. Tinha uma equipe em Medelín. Eu também achei uma equipe que se dizia a “única autoridade de Jiu-Jitsu na Colômbia”, mas eles eram muito polêmicos e queriam propagar o Jiu-Jitsu de forma muito agressiva, de um jeito impróprio. No geral, encontrei um país com pouca informação sobre o que é o Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hoje a Colômbia conta com pelo menos seis grandes e bem estruturados times de Jiu-Jitsu, que seguem as autoridades e modelos internacionais.

No Brasil, o Jiu-Jitsu é bastante usado como ferramenta social, ajudando a tirar jovens das ruas e da vida criminosa. Como é na Colômbia?

A Team Legacy tem um projeto social em Bucaramanga chamado “Fundação Arte Suave”, onde eu ensino a arte do Jiu-Jitsu a crianças cegas. Essas crianças vêm de comunidades muito pobres e eu ensino de graça. Esperamos que o Jiu-Jitsu mude a vida delas para melhor. Também existe um projeto social na cidade de Cali, onde um membro da equipe Gracie Barra ensina Jiu-Jitsu a crianças das favelas.

Você trabalha com algum brasileiro?

Sim... Eu trabalho sob a tutela do Christiano Bertolucci, que é um faixa-preta brasileiro. Eu também tenho um amigo de Fortaleza que recentemente veio e visitou a Colômbia, André Mateus. Pretendo convidar outros amigos do Brasil para vir aqui e nos ajudar a ensinar Jiu-Jitsu.

Você pretende trazer alguns alunos para competir no Brasil ou em outro país?

Claro... Irei ao Brasil este ano para treinar um mês na academia do meu professor em Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais. Pretendo levar meus alunos para o Brasil no próximo ano para competir. A ideia é implantar uma base sólida este ano em toda a Team Legacy Jiu-Jitsu para que possam lutar bem nos torneios brasileiros.

Como você acha que eles se sairiam hoje se viessem competir aqui?

Eles precisariam treinar muito, mas acho que eles estão sendo moldados por mãos boas e um bom time. Temos um excelente programa de Jiu-Jitsu, que está focado no Jiu-Jitsu tradicional, além do avançado para competições. Eu também procuro fazer com que meus alunos aprendam a história do Jiu-Jitsu, assim como seus valores e filosofia.

Vocês já formaram algum faixa-preta?

Ainda não existem colombianos com faixa marrom ou preta aqui na Colômbia. Um amigo meu, Carlos Barreto, que veio do Panamá, é faixa marrom e dá aulas em Medelín e comanda uma escola da Gracie Barra. Eu também conheço alguns colombianos que são faixas marrom ou preta nos Estados Unidos. Em breve eles voltarão para a Colômbia para ajudar no meu trabalho.

The American Luis Carreno began practicing Jiu-Jitsu Amaury Bitteti Florida, United States, and later went on to train with Brazilian Cristiano Bertolucci, New York. With a purple belt at the waist, Luis is focused on a special work in Colombia. In an exclusive interview with tatami, the foreigner spoke about the work to include the Colombian army in the gentle art, social action with Jiu-Jitsu in our neighbor South America and much more.

How did you start working with the Jiu-Jitsu in Colombia?

I moved to Colombia in October 2009 and began to introduce Jiu-Jitsu in the form of workshops in different schools of martial arts. Since 2009, I made more than 20 seminars in major cities like Bogota, Bucaramanga, Burrancabermeja, Armenia, Tunja and Valledupar. To date, the Legacy Team Jiu-Jitsu is in four groups, and our goal is to close the year with eight schools of Jiu-Jitsu.

What was more difficult when you started working in Colombia?

I think the hardest part was getting sponsors who supported our pioneer activity and social projects. As the Jiu-Jitsu is a new sport in Colombia, we are showing to the general public with exhibitions, courses and tournaments to show the Colombian people the benefits of practicing the gentle art.

As was the Jiu-Jitsu Colombian before your arrival?

When I came to Colombia barely existed Jiu-Jitsu. Had a team in Medellín. I also found a team that was said "the only authority Jiu-Jitsu in Colombia," but they were very controversial and wanted to spread Jiu-Jitsu very aggressively in an improper way. Overall, I found a country with little information about what is the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Colombia today has at least six large and well-structured teams Jiu-Jitsu, which follow the authorities and international models.

In Brazil, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is often used as a social tool, helping to get young people off the streets and the criminal life. How is it in Colombia?

The Legacy Team has a project office in Bucaramanga called "Gentle Art Foundation, where I teach the art of Jiu-Jitsu to blind children. These children come from very poor communities and I teach for free. We hope that the Jiu-Jitsu change their lives for the better. There is also a social project in the city of Cali, where a staff member of Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu teaches the children of the slums.

You work with some Brazilian?

Yes .. I work under the tutelage of Cristiano Bertolucci, who is a Brazilian black belt. I also have a friend who recently came to Fortaleza and visited Colombia, Andre Mateus. I intend to invite other friends from Brazil to come here and help us teach Jiu-Jitsu.

You want to bring some students to compete in Brazil or in another country?

Sure ... I am going to Brazil this year to train a month at my gym teacher in Pocos de Caldas, Minas Gerais. I intend to bring my students to Brazil next year to compete. The idea is to set a solid foundation this year across the Legacy Team Jiu-Jitsu so that they can fight well in tournaments in Brazil.

How do you think they would leave today if they came here to compete?

They need to train a lot, but I think they are being shaped by good hands and a good team. We have an excellent program Jiu-Jitsu, which focuses on traditional jiu-jitsu, advanced beyond the competitions. I also try to make my students learn the history of Jiu-Jitsu, as well as their values and philosophy.

Have you formed a black belt?

There are still no Colombian brown belt or black here in Colombia. A friend of mine, Carlos Baker, who came from Panama, is a brown belt and teaches classes in Medellín and commands a Gracie Barra school. I also know some Colombians are brown or black bands in the United States. Soon they will return to Colombia to help in my work.
