In October 2009, Lyoto Machida entered the octagon of the UFC to make his first title defense, and precisely against a Brazilian. On the other side of the cage was Maurício Shogun, one of the great names of defunct Pride. The 25-minute fight ended decisively in favor of Machida, but many people disagreed with the outcome.
The polemic about this decision was so big that today, more than five months later, fans still debate in forums around the world about who deserved the win. Determined to put an end to this discussion, UFC decided to arrange a rematch between the Brazilians on May 8, when the UFC will have its 113th edition in Vancouver, Canada. Warming up to the battle, TATAME Magazine went out, watched the training of the athletes and chatted with the stars about the second fight.
"It's a new fight. Even by the fact that Shogun is a very eclectic athlete and has this ability for change. This is a new battle, I’m prioritizing certain skills and we don’t know what is about to come. He has well-defined grounds, calculated movements, he’s good in both parts, in striking and on the ground, and so do I," Machida said, betting that the challenger will not change his tactics for the rematch. "It’s a strategical thing. Of course we end up repeating some moves, it’s normal, no one can change that much.”
In the exclusive report, Shogun reveals that he’s not changing his way of fighting. “I intend to build a strategy and follow it, but I still have the same fight style. I fight for 10 years one way and I will not change now, I'll fight against Lyoto and do what needs to be done to win," said the champion of the Pride GP in 2005, explaining a little bit about his strategy. "The kicking part for sure he will try to block, and probably is already working on these defenses. Surely the boxing part is one more option that I intend to use," he adds.

Em outubro de 2009, Lyoto Machida entrou no octagon do UFC para fazer sua primeira dessa de cinturão, e justamente contra um brasileiro. Do outro lado da jaula estava Maurício Shogun, um dos grandes nomes do extinto Pride. Os 25 minutos de luta terminaram com decisão a favor do carateca, mas muita gente discordou do resultado.
A polêmica foi tanta que, até hoje, mais de cinco meses depois, fãs ainda debatem em fóruns mundo afora quem merecia a vitória. Determinado a colocar um ponto final nesta discussão, o UFC decidiu casar a revanche entre os brasileiros para o dia 8 de maio, data em que o Ultimate realiza sua 113ª edição na cidade de Vancouver, no Canadá. No aquecimento para o confronto, a Revista TATAME de abril foi a campo, acompanhou o treino dos atletas e conversou com as estrelas sobre o reencontro.
“É uma nova luta. Até pelo Shogun ser um cara muito eclético, ter essa capacidade de mudança. Isso é uma nova luta, onde eu estou priorizando certos aspectos e a gente não sabe o que vai acontecer. Ele tem fundamentos bem definidos, bem trabalhados, a parte em pé e a queda, e eu também tenho”, analisou Machida, apostando que o curitibano não mudará sua tática para a revanche. “Aí vai da estratégia. Lógico que acaba repetindo certas coisas, é normal, ninguém vai mudar tanto assim”.
Na matéria exclusiva, Shogun revela que não mudará seu jogo. “Pretendo montar uma estratégia e segui-la, mas o meu estilo é o mesmo. Eu luto há 10 anos de um jeito e não vou mudar agora, vou lutar com o Lyoto e fazer o que tem que ser feito para vencer”, disse o campeão do GP do Pride em 2005, explicando um pouco sua estratégia. “A parte dos chutes com certeza ele vai procurar bloquear, já deve estar trabalhando essas defesas. Com certeza a parte de Boxe vai ser mais uma opção que pretendo usar”, adianta.
