World Champion in 2008, Sérgio Moraes got to the division’s finale in the following year, but the medal went to his team partner, Marcelinho Gargia, on the “odd or even” joke. Focused in another title this year, Serginho wants to repeat what he did last year and close it up with his partner. To do so, the athlete flights today to New York, where he will train with Marcelinho until the CBJJ’s World. “Marcelinho is an excellent athlete and a great friend. Having a guy to switch positions on the same weight division as you is very important and it will be like an early finale”, affirmed Serginho, on the following chat.
When will you go to New York?
I travel today… As soon as I get there, I’ll start my preparation on the best possible way, and get as good as I can get, like I always do in the World’s preparations.
How long will you stay in NY before going to California?
I’ll stay there until the World begins. There will be four and a half weeks of hard training… I’m going there so my mom doesn’t see me crying (laughs).
What is the difference between training in and outside Brazil?
For me, in terms of quality, I can’t say much. Here in Brazil it’s like a cradle. The boys have an impressive level, since the purple up to the black belt, you can see wonderful fighters. For me the difference is the focus. I’m not teaching, I’m leaving the gym with some responsible pupils of mine, so all of my focus will be around my trainings and who will my body reacts to it.
What is the point of this training along with Marcelinho Garcia?
To sum up our strengths, analyzing how the championship may be so that we can get there ready and, if it’s God’s will, we’ll get to the finale. Well, Marcelinho is an excellent athlete and a great friend. Having a guy to switch positions on the same weight division as you is very important and it will be like an early finale (laughs).
How is your English? Sharp or will you have to bamboozle?
“I do no (laughs)”... I will have to bamboozle. Tati, Marcelinho Garcia’s wife, promised to give me some lessons, so I’ll try to improve my English.
How is it to fight for a living in the football’s country?
It’s not easy, but thank God today Jiu-Jitsu lessons and fights and MMA are my meal ticket. You know fighting is not really respected here and there are just a few places that make space for us to train. For example, now I managed to be here in the sport center of Cohab II in Itaquera, east zone of São Paulo, due to my record, but it still is very hard. I think that people have to be aware that it’s one of the sports which is getting large proportions worldwide. In other countries, Jiu-Jitsu is a school class and in the country that is a cradle, people don’t respect it like they should, but I hope someday it changes. We’ve been growing each year, it’s just a matter of believing.
What was the biggest dream you could see coming true, due to your fighting?
To be black belt world champion of Jiu-Jitsu, it was a dream for me.
And a dream you would like to come true?
To conquer the UFC’s belt, and I’ll go for it until the end this year, and I pray for God for having this opportunity.

Campeão mundial em 2008, Sérgio Moraes chegou à final da categoria no ano seguinte, mas a medalha ficou com o seu companheiro de equipe, Marcelinho Garcia, no “par ou ímpar”. Focado por mais um título, Serginho quer repetir o feito do ano passado e fechar a categoria com o parceiro. Para isto, o atleta embarca hoje para Nova Iorque, onde treinará com Marcelinho até o Mundial da CBJJ. “O Marcelinho é um excelente atleta e excelente amigo. Ter um cara para trocar as posições e da mesma categoria isso é muito importante e vai rolar uma final adiantada nos treinos”, afirmou Serginho, no bate-papo abaixo.
Quando você viaja para Nova Iorque?
Viajo hoje... Chegando lá para fazer toda a preparação direitinho, da melhor forma possível, e chegar na ponta dos cascos, como eu sempre tenho chegado nos Mundiais.
Quanto tempo você fica em NY antes de ir para Califórnia?
Fico até começar o Mundial. Serão quatro semanas de muito treino... Estou indo prá lá para minha mãe não me ver chorar (risos).
Qual a diferença em treinar no Brasil e fora do Brasil?
Para mim, em termos de qualidade, a gente não pode nem falar. Acho que aqui no Brasil é um berço. A molecada tem uma qualidade sensacional, desde a faixa roxa até a preta, você já vê moleques sensacionais. Para mim a diferença é o foco. Não vou dar aula, vou sair da academia, deixar alguns alunos como responsáveis, então meu foco todo vai ser em treinamento e vamos ver como o corpo vai responder.
Qual o objetivo desse treinamento com o Marcelinho Garcia?
Somar as forças, analisar como é que pode ser o campeonato para chegarmos bem preparados e, se Deus quiser, fazer mais uma dobradinha na categoria. Pô, o Marcelinho é um excelente atleta e excelente amigo. Ter um cara para trocar as posições e da mesma categoria isso é muito importante, e vai rolar uma final adiantada nos treinos (risos).
E o seu inglês está afiado, ou vai rolar um “embromation”?
“I do no” (risos)... Tem que rolar o “embromation”. A Tati, esposa do Marcelinho Garcia, prometeu me dar umas aulas, então vou aproveitar para treinar também o meu inglês.
E como é viver da luta no país do futebol?
Não é fácil, mas graças a Deus hoje eu vivo do Jiu-Jitsu, do MMA e das minhas aulas de Jiu-Jitsu. Você sabe que a luta é pouco reconhecida e são poucos lugares que abrem o espaço para gente poder treinar. Por exemplo, agora consegui estar aqui no centro esportivo da Cohab II em Itaquera, na zona leste de São Paulo, devido a minha trajetória, mas ainda é muito difícil. Acho que algumas cabeças precisam se conscientizar de que esse é um dos esportes que mais crescem em todo o mundo. Em outros países o Jiu-Jitsu é matéria escolar e no país que é berço ainda não tem o reconhecimento que merece, mas acho que um dia isso muda. A gente vem crescendo a cada ano que passa, é só acreditar.
Qual foi o maior sonho que você já realizou, proporcionado pela luta?
Ser campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa preta, esse para mim foi um sonho.
E um sonho que você gostaria de realizar?
Conquistar o cinturão do UFC, e esse eu vou atrás até o fim e, se Deus quiser, eu vou ter minha oportunidade.
