A different look on a historical Mundial

You read on TATAME’s website the great show of Jiu-Jitsu given by Roger Gracie on this year’s Mundial, which has been broadcasted live by us. But, what exactly happened on the pyramid’s gym, in California?

On an historical  article, which is on the cover of this month’s edition of TATAME Magazine (check it here), we showed why Mundial 2010 will be remembered as the most exciting, unpredictable and busy in all times of Mundial. TATAME: historical edition with two covers

Repeating the great success of May’s edition, when we innovated and launched for the first time an edition with two different covers, TATAME Magazine brings to you another historical edition. On TATAME #173, which will get to the newsstands from all Brazil this week, with Dana White and Roger Gracie on the covers, you can check all the exclusive and unmissable articles!

UFC in Brazil on 2011!

On a large scoop, TATAME found out that UFC will make an edition of the event in Brazil on 2011, and it already has a fixed place where it will take place: Sao Paulo. On the article, you will get to know every detail of the strategy UFC set to make a great comeback to Brazil, a country on which the event has done only one edition, in 1998, besides checking an exclusive interview with Dana White, president of Ultimate, and the manager Terence Mattar, UFC’s partner on this journey.

The World of records

When it comes to Jiu-Jitsu, World 2010 is the highlight. On a historical edition, we spoke with the new world recordists. Roger Gracie, three-time absolute and seven-time weight champion of the World, Bruno Malfacine, the only three-time champion of his division, the four-time champion Marcelinho Garcinha, besides the consecration of Rafael Mendes, Michael Langhi, Tarsis Humphreys and the women show in California.

Still on World’s mat, we analyzed the growth of the commitment of the non-Brazilians on the biggest competition of the soft art on earth and we wondered: can they break the Brazilian hegemony on the World? The new phase of Wanderlei Silva

Back to MMA, we talked with Wanderlei Silva in Las Vegas, United States, and followed his new phase as a coach, leading the team and celebrating his pupil’s wins on America. On the exclusive chat, Pride’s former champion praised Maurício Shogun’s win over Lyoto Machida and “passes the baton” to the southern guy, his “pupil” at the time they ruled Pride.

Being considered by many as the best heavyweight fighter from all times, Fedor Emelianenko is also on TATAME #173. On an exclusive interview, the Russian rejected the label as the best of the world and shot in Dana White’s direction, claiming he could already be on UFC. On our visit to California, we broke into the gym of the physical trainer Rafael Alejarra, who told us who is his work with stars of the caliber of Demian, Cigano, Xande, Cyborg, Royler, Minotouto, among others.

Carlos Gracie Jr. wants to see Jiu-Jitsu on the Olympic Games

Hillary Williams gets the black belt of Jiu-Jitsu

No-Gi weigh and absolute world champion and third place on ADCC, Hillary Williams conquest recently the most important title of her career, the golden medal on BJJ Worlds 2010, which happened on the beginning of this month in California.

And the fighter now enters a new phase, receiving the black belt last Saturday (12), in a seminar on the gym West Side MMA, in Arkansas, United States. The though girl received the black belt from professors Ronaldo “The Crazy Cuban” Delgado and Justin “White Rice”. Rodrigo Cavaca, Hillary's coach here in Brazil, knows the responsibility of his pupil will only grow, and now he already thinks about the possible confrontations on the black belt category.

“Now the responsibility is even greater, since it's coming now, because she's got such a little time to practice, but she has been doing good fights with really tough black belt girls. It's all a matter of time and dedication. Although she is really dedicated, she'll have to go that extra mile to start going head to head with the tops like Kyra, Bia Mesquita, Luanna and the absolute crew, such as Penny Thomas”, he said, for seeing a victorious future ahead of her. “It's all a matter of time until she can go toe to toe with these women who have been on the scene so long with all these world titles on their backs”, commented Cavaca.

Hillary Williams recebe a preta de Jiu-Jitsu

Campeã mundial peso e absoluto sem quimono e medalha de bronze no ADCC, Hillary Williams conquistou recentemente o título mais importante de sua carreira, a medalha de ouro no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu que rolou no começo do mês na Califórnia.

E a lutadora entra agora em uma nova fase, após receber a faixa preta no último sábado (12), em um seminário na academia West Side MMA, no Arkansas, Estados Unidos. A casca-grossa recebeu a faixa preta das mãos dos professores Ronaldo “The Crazy Cuban” Delgado. Rodrigo Cavaca, amigo de Hillary aqui no Brasil, comentou sobre a graduação e falou sobre os possíveis confrontos na faixa preta.

“Agora a responsabilidade é bem maior, já que ela está chegando agora, pois ela tem muito pouco tempo de treino, mas ela tem feito boas lutas com meninas muito duras e faixas-pretas. É tudo uma questão de tempo, mais dedicação... Apesar de ela ser bem dedicada, vai ter que se esforçar um pouco mais para começar a bater de frente com as tops como a Kyra, a Bia Mesquita, a Luanna e a galera do absoluto, como a Penny Thomas”, disse, prevendo um futuro vitorioso. “É só uma questão de tempo ela bater de frente com essas que já estão no cenário com vários títulos mundiais nas costas”, comentou Cavaca.

The best days of Bernardo Faria’s life

Just when he left Pan Am, Bernardo Faria started crying and yelled: “this is the best day of my life”. Some months later, Alliance’s black belt came back to California and, with a sweep on the last minutes, he beat the favorite Xande Ribeiro and won his first world title. “This is the best day of my life, I’m a part of the best team of the world”, celebrated Bernardo, who could not stop the tears once again.

It is obvious, 2010 is the best year of Bernardo Faria’s career, and he closed up the Europe title with his professor, Fábio Gurgel and brought home the absolute Brazil title. On World, it felt like the cherry on the top of the icing. “Xande is one of the three best fighters on the whole world, maybe he’s the second best, him and Roger, but thanks God I beat him. I really respect him, but I came here with a strategy set. He’s very strong, has a good technique and is very tactical, but thing went my way today”, celebrates the new champion.

Being on the top of the world is something indescribable to Bernardo, who reminds the difficult moments he went through. “I was training with Ricardo Marques and, qhen I got the black belt, I graduated on college and he supported me to come to Alliance, and now I’m bringing him to train here with me, who is a very honest guy, graduated me from white to black belt, and now I have the best professor of the world to keep training me”, celebrates, keeping his eyes on future challenges. “I intend to fight whenever I can, because I love competing… I’m fight on No-Gi now”.

Os melhores dias da vida de Bernardo Faria

Assim que ganhou o Pan-Americano, Bernardo Faria foi às lágrimas e gritou: “esse é o melhor dia da minha vida”. Alguns meses depois, o faixa-preta da Alliance voltou à Califórnia e, com uma raspagem nos minutos finais, derrotou o favorito Xande Ribeiro e conquistou seu primeiro título mundial. “Esse é o melhor dia da minha vida, estou na melhor equipe do mundo”, comemorou Bernardo, sem conter o choro mais uma vez.

É inegável, 2010 é o melhor ano da carreira de Bernardo Faria, que ainda dividiu o título do Europeu com seu professor, Fábio Gurgel, e levou para casa o absoluto do Brasileiro. No Mundial, o título coroou mais uma atuação perfeita, e a vitória sobre Xande foi a cereja do bolo. “O Xande está entre os três melhores lutadores do mundo, se bobear entre os dois, ele e o Roger, mas graças a Deus consegui ganhar. O respeito muito, mas já vim com uma estratégia traçada. Ele é muito forte, técnico e estratégico, mas deu tudo certo hoje”, vibra o novo campeão.

Estar no topo do mundo é algo indescritível para Bernardo, que relembra os momentos de dificuldade que passou. “Eu treinava com o Ricardo Marques e, quando peguei a faixa-preta, me formei na faculdade e ele deu toda força para eu vir para a Alliance, e agora estou trazendo ele, que é um cara muito honesto, me formou da branca à preta, e hoje eu tenho o melhor professor do mundo do meu lado para continuar me ensinando”, comemora, de olho nos próximos desafios. “Pretendo lutar tudo que eu puder, pois eu amo competir... Vou lutar o No-Gi agora”.

Bianca: teammate can become an opponent

The feather weight division of World of Jiu-Jitsu, which happened last weekend in California, was dominated by Gracie Barra, but for the excitement of the audience who was present in Long Beach, in California, there was a final fight. “I fought against Fabi on South America, but we have never done a World finale”, tells Bianca Barreto, who swept Fabiana Borges and got the golden medal. “We worked really hard to get to this point, so our professors and coaches understand that… And the best should win”, explains.

To fight against a training partner is a complicated issue on Jiu-Jitsu, but Bianca shows that is possible to fight for real without any problems. “I fought several times against my sister, Tânia… She’s also a black belt, she won the bronze medal on Brazil’s absolute and on the medium division too. We always confront each other… Sometimes she wins, sometimes I do… It’s like a real family”, jokes, wanting another title on 2011: “I’ll try to win my seventh… Who knows?”.

Para Bianca, companheira pode virar oponente

O peso pena do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, que aconteceu no último final de semana na Califórnia, foi dominado pela Gracie Barra, mas, para a alegria da torcida que foi ao ginásio de Long Beach, na Califórnia, rolou final. “Eu já tinha lutado com a Fabi no Sul Americano, mas nunca tinha feito uma final de Mundial com ela”, conta Bianca Barreto, que raspou Fabiana Borges para ficar com o ouro. “Nós ralamos muito para chegar aqui, então os nossos professores e instrutores compreendem isso... Então, que vença a melhor”, explica.

Lutar com o companheiro de treino é assunto delicado no Jiu-Jitsu, mas Bianca mostra que é possível lutar “à vera” sem problemas. “Eu já fiz várias finais com a minha irmã, a Tânia... Ela é faixa preta também, foi terceiro lugar agora no absoluto no Brasileiro e na categoria médio. A gente sempre se pega... Às vezes ela ganha, às vezes eu ganho... É como uma família mesmo”, brinca, de olho em mais título em 2011: “vou tentar o meu sétimo... Quem sabe?”, indaga a hexacampeã mundial.

Cavaca on the great performance at Long Beach

The only black belt who submitted his opponent on the finale, Rodrigo Cavaca gave a great show in California. After beating the two-time absolute world champion Márcio Pé de Pano with a triangle, Cavaca attacked Antônio Peinado and Roberto Abreu’s foot to win the ultra heavy title. After leaving the mat as the biggest name among the heaviest, Cavaca talked to TATAME about his title, his next goals, the dream of absolute’s title and the wish to fight in Abu Dhabi.

Champion of the ultra heavy division, you submitted almost all of your opponents standing. Did you imagine you would do such a mess?

I didn’t know what would I do in the championship, but the guys were complaining back on the gym (laughs). If I’m training with tough guys there, it must work here too, right?

Is it your first World conquest with the black belt?

Yes, among the black belts it’s my first world title. As an athlete, my dream always was to become a black belt world champion. I don’t know what comes next, but I’ll have a next goal, for sure (laughs).

Maybe an absolute dispute...

Yeah, maybe. There are very strong guys there like Roger, Xande and Rômulo, but I manage to get to a similar level than theirs. This has been an amazing weekend, my brother is now a world champion, Buchecha too… Go Checkmat!! We had a brown belt world champion on the medium weight division, my pupils did good performances, I’m touched.

What was the hardest fight for you?

On the first fight, against Peinado, I surprised him with a move he didn’t know, a different foot lock. I came forward and applied this foot lock, right on the very first seconds, so it was an atypical fight and it’s hard for a thing like that to happen to him again. This was a great fight, but for sure the finale was tougher. Ciborg is a great name, he has beaten Vella twice, who was the favorite to win the title, he was strong and is an athlete I admire and respect.

Do you have anything in mind for the future?

I plan my year by semesters. On the first I joined Brazil, Pan Am, Europe and World and, thanks God, I got to the finale in all on those championships. On the second semester of this year I want to put things in order on my gym, strengthen the trainings back in Santos, there is where I live and have ten gyms. I’ll put everything in their right places and get ready for next year, when I want to fight in Abu Dhabi… My main goal is to join Abu Dhabi’s event and get to the finales.

Único faixa-preta a finalizar na grande final, Rodrigo Cavaca deu show na Califórnia. Após eliminar o bicampeão absoluto Márcio Pé de Pano com um triângulo, Cavaca atacou os pés de Antônio Peinado e Roberto Abreu Ciborg para faturar o título do pesadíssimo. Após deixar o tatame como o grande nome do pesadíssimo, Cavaca conversou com a TATAME sobre o título inédito e seus próximos objetivos. “Como atleta, o meu sonho sempre foi ser campeão mundial na faixa preta.
