Cordeiro: “Fedor lost for the right one”

Muay Thai’s coach of Fabrício Werdum, Rafael Cordeiro could not hide his happiness while he saw his pupil submitting Fedor Emelianenko, number one of the world, at only 69 seconds of the fight. On the day after the historical win, Rafael talked to TATAME and commented the bout, predict the rematches on Werdum’s way on Strikeforce and talked about the Brazilian party in California, with the win of the Chute Boxe athlete Cris Cyborg.

What did you think about the bout?

I knew we’ve been training hard and we got to the point we could see clearly a win coming and it was a great happiness for us because it was a prove that we’ve been working on the right direction. It was a great win and I expected it due to what Werdum has been training on the gym and for what he demonstrated on this one and a half year of training.

Did your got scared when Fedor came forward and Werdum felt?

Of course, I knew that could happen for the potential of the two heavyweight athletes. But from the moment he went for the ground, all the training we did started to show its results on the ground and pound, hitting hard Werdum, until he got his arm on a good position…  We worked on a tiht Jiu-Jitsu, not an open guard Jiu-Jitsu. I believe it’s the result of a great team work. When he went to the ground, we knew that he could submit the guy any minute.

Did you expect the win would come so quickly?

No, I didn’t, no one could see it coming, but we hoped for a win of Werdum. We told his to take his time, that he would have three rounds to take this guy down, will all due respect, but he would have the whole three rounds to end this fight.

How do you see Werdum, a guy who has been fired from UFC after a defeat for Junior Cigano, beating a guy who is considered as the best fighter of the world?

When Werdum left Porto Alegre and came here he changed all his life here on the United States. He could spend more time with his family and wife, we started training together and life’s made of choices. The script is made by choices and this was his. This left from UFC was really hard on him, he knew the difficulties he would have to overcome, but he had three great wins after that and now he’s within the tops. I believe the time has come for Werdum to write his name on history and we knew this could happen any moment, so we’re very happy that he’s someone so close to us and represents so well the spirit of a fighter. I believe that Fedor lost for the right one, he was the right fighter to beat Fedor.

Who will he confront now?

Now he’ll have to face Alistar, who is the champion, then Fedor again and then do another fight against Overeem. In fact, he has four more fights and we intend to do two rematches. Now he’ll fight against Overeem, then Fedor and then against Overeem again at home, this third fight. That happens because the confederations gives you this when you have the belt, they give you this right of a rematch. Probably this four fights he’ll do will be about rematches.

Do you believe that a rematch against Fedor can come first, like Werdum said himself while he was still inside the octagon?

Now we have to analyze all options. He beat the best of the world so far. Let’s see what happens and what the event will offer him so we can think about what’s best. The moment is really great for him and for everybody.

There was also the win of Cris Cyborg. How was the Brazilian party yesterday?

It was great, we made much noise with our entire crew. It was a hell of a party… It seemed as if it was the finale of World Cup and Brazil had won, on the backstage we played some Brazilian music, samba, “capoeira”, everything you can imagine… It was a great party. We’re very glad, the entire team because the guy is such a great person.

Treinador de Muay Thai de Fabrício Werdum, Rafael Cordeiro não conseguia esconder a felicidade de ver seu pupilo finalizar Fedor Emelianenko, o número um do mundo, em apenas 69 segundos de luta. No dia seguinte à vitória histórica, Rafael conversou com a TATAME e comentou o combate, previu bastantes revanches no caminho de Werdum no Strikeforce e falou sobre a festa brasileira na Califórnia, com a vitória da chuteboxer Cris Cyborg.

O que você achou da luta?

Achei que estávamos treinando bastante e chegou o momento que víamos a vitória bem clara para nós e foi uma alegria muito grande nós naquela hora e a prova de que o trabalho estava surtindo efeito. Foi uma vitória muito boa e esperada pelo que o Werdum veio treinando na academia e pelo que ele demonstrou nesse um ano e meio de treinamento.

Você chegou a se assustar quando o Fedor veio para cima e o Werdum caiu?

Claro, eu sabia que aquilo poderia acontecer pelo poder de fogo entre dois pesos pesados. Mas, a partir do momento que foi para o chão, caiu todo o treinamento que a gente fez de ground and pound, batendo pesado em cima do Werdum, de técnica, de pegar o braço, de posição... Trabalhamos um Jiu-Jitsu justo, não um Jiu-Jitsu aberto na guarda. Acho que foi um trabalho muito bem elaborado por todo o time. Quando ele foi para o chão, a gente sabia que a qualquer momento ele poderia finalizar o cara.

Você esperava que a vitória fosse tão rápida?

Não esperava, ninguém esperava por isso, mas esperávamos que fosse uma vitória do Werdum. Dissemos para ele não ter pressa, que ele tinha três rounds para pegar o cara, com todo o respeito, mas ele teria três rounds para tentar terminar essa luta.

Como você vê o Werdum, um cara que foi demitido do UFC depois de uma derrota para o Junior Cigano, ganhar de um cara que é considerado o melhor do mundo?

Quando o Werdum saiu de Porto Alegre e veio para cá ele mudou toda a vida dele aqui nos Estados Unidos. Passou mais tempo com a esposa e a família dele, começamos a treinar juntos, e a vida é feita de escolhas. O roteiro é feito de escolhas e essa foi a escolha dele. Essa saída do UFC foi uma coisa forte na vida dele, sabia das dificuldades que teria que enfrentar, mas teve três grandes vitórias depois daquilo e está entre as cabeças. Acho que hoje chegou um momento em que o Werdum escreveu o nome dele da história e a gente sabia que isso ia acontecer alguma hora, a gente fica muito feliz que seja uma pessoa que está ali tão perto da gente e representa o coração de um lutador. Acho que o Fedor caiu contra a pessoa certa, ele foi a pessoa certa para bater o Fedor.

Quem você acha que ele vai enfrentar agora?

Agora ele vai ter pela frente o Alistair, que é o campeão, depois contra o Fedor e depois mais um contra o Overeem. Na verdade, ele tem mais quatro lutas e o que a gente pretende é fazer mais duas revanches. Agora ele vai lutar com o Overeem, depois com o Fedor e depois novamente contra o Overeem aqui em casa, a terceira luta. Isso vai acontecer pela consideração que eles te dão quando você tem o cinturão, eles te dão o direito da revanche. Provavelmente as próximas quatro lutas dele vão girar em torno disso.

Você acha que pode acontecer uma revanche direta contra o Fedor, como o próprio Werdum falou ainda dentro do octagon?

Agora a gente tem que pensar, analisar todas as opções. Ele bateu o até então melhor do mundo. Vamos ver o que vai acontecer no decorrer, o que o evento tem para oferecer para ele agora, e vamos pensar no melhor a se fazer. O momento está sendo muito bom para ele e para todo mundo.

Teve também a vitória da Cris Cyborg. Como foi a festa brasileira ontem?

Foi muito bom, a gente fez o nosso barulho muito grande com o nosso time. Foi uma festa... Parecia final de Copa do Mundo e que o Brasil tinha ganho, nos bastidores rolou pagode, capoeira, tudo que você pode imaginar... Uma grande festa, parou tudo.  A gente está muito feliz, o time todo está muito feliz porque o cara é muito gente boa.
