Fabrício Werdum needed 69 seconds to write his name on MMA history. One day after it completed 28 months of his dismissal from UFC, the black belt entered Strikeforce’s octagon and got off there with something no one has ever done: he forced Fedor Emelianenko, Pride’s former champion and number one among the heavyweights for over seven years, to quit.
At ease and relax before the fight begun, making jokes with his friends on the backstage of the event, Werdum changed his physiognomy when he was on his way to the octagon. Focused, he wanted to win. Months before the combat, the southern guy said to TATAME that his strategy would be to go for the Russian’s neck. “Fedor would never hit my arm or my leg”, he said at that time. On the other side, Emelianenko kept his traditional look. The chubby tummy was there, the cold face, as usual, staring at Werdum before the bell rang. “I wasn’t scared, to fight is my life”, said the Brazilian.
A JIU-JITSU WIN
Just when the bout started, Fedor controlled the center of the octagon and, after being hit by a low kick, he tight the rhythm and made Fabrício to move in circles around him, getting closer to the grid, while he prepared his attack. The blows got Werdum, who shook and felt. Or was the Brazilian going backwards to he would bring Fedor on his guard? It does not matter, the important thing was that Werdum managed to hold the Russian’s momentum, with a Jiu-Jitsu trick, getting his arm. Fedor escaped, just like Werdum predicted he would, but it was then that the southern boy attacked his neck with a tight triangle.
“It was a Double choke... On the arm and on the neck… Did everyone see it? (laughs)”, asked Fabrício on the press conference, provoking the laughter of the journalists. “I’ll show this choke on my next seminar (laughs). The next seminar will be cheap, it’ll only cost 10 dollars”, said, making even Renato Babalu, who helped him on the translation of the questions, to loose his breath during the laughs. “I don’t like to stay in a room alone, because my head is too focused on the fight. To make jokes with my friends is a good thing for me, I play videogame all the time”, reveals.
As for his strategy, the Brazilian gives its credits for his training partners and coaches. “It’s impossible to win a fight like this, against the best of the world, by yourself, so it’s important that you have support, a strong team. That give you strength during the fight”, thanked, revealing that her wife, unlike MMA lovers, did not watch the most important fight on his career. “My wife never watches my fights, she always goes to the supermarket on the time of the fight and I call her later and tell her how it was (laughs)”, revealed, and everybody started laughing too.
REMATCHING FEDOR, SUPER FIGHT WITH LESNAR?
Champion of the division, Alistar Overeem hoped for Fedor to win so he could defend his belt against the Russian, but Werdum’s triumph, an old acquaintance of the Netherlander (Werdum submitted Overeem on Pride), changed all expectations. When everyone was hoping for a challenge against Overeem at the end of the bout, Werdum repeated what he said to TATAME before the fight: “I won today, but Fedor is the best. I’d like to fight against him again”. On his win speech, which has been rehearsal one day before the fight, Wedum included a super fight against Brock Lesnar, heavyweight champion of UFC. And now, does anybody doubt he can beat him?

Fabrício Werdum precisou de 69 segundos para deixar seu nome gravado na história do MMA. Um dia depois de completar 28 meses de sua demissão do UFC, o faixa-preta entrou no octagon do Strikeforce e conseguiu o que nenhum outro lutador jamais havia feito: forçar Fedor Emelianenko, ex-campeão do Pride e número um dos pesos pesados há mais de sete anos, a desistir.
Descontraído e relaxado antes da luta, fazendo piadas com os companheiros e brincando nos bastidores do evento, Werdum mudou de fisionomia a caminho do octagon. Focado, ele queria vencer. Meses antes do combate, o gaúcho confidenciou à TATAME que sua estratégia seria atacar o pescoço do russo. “O Fedor nunca bateria no braço ou na perna”, ele disse na época. Do outro lado, Emelianenko mantinha sua tradicional fisionomia. A “barriguinha” estava lá, e o rosto frio, como de costume, encarou Werdum antes do soar do gongo. “Eu não senti medo, lutar é a minha vida”, rebateu o brasileiro.
A VITÓRIA DO JIU-JITSU
Assim que a luta começou, Fedor tomou o centro do octagon e, depois de levar um low kick, apertou mais o ritmo e deixou Fabrício rodar o octagon, mais perto da grade, enquanto preparava o ataque. Os golpes atingiram Werdum, que balançou e caiu. Ou será que o brasileiro se jogou para trás para trazer Fedor para sua guarda? Não faz diferença, o importante é que Werdum conseguiu segurar o ímpeto do russo e, na malandragem do Jiu-Jitsu, atacou seu braço. Fedor escapou, como Werdum havia previsto, mas foi então que o gaúcho atacou o pescoço com um justíssimo triângulo.
“O estrangulamento foi duplo... No braço e no pescoço... Todos viram? (risos)”, indagou Fabrício na coletiva de imprensa, provocando as gargalhadas dos jornalistas. “Mas eu vou mostrar esse estrangulamento no meu próximo seminário (risos). O próximo seminário é barato, só vai custar 10 dólares”, emendou, fazendo até Renato Babalu, que o ajudou na tradução das perguntas, perder o fôlego com as risadas. “Eu não gosto de ficar no quarto sozinho, porque a minha cabeça fica pensando demais na luta. Ficar fazendo piada com os meus amigos é muito bom pra mim, fico jogando vídeo-game o tempo todo”, revela.
Quanto à sua estratégia, o brasileiro credita o sucesso aos companheiros e treinadores. “É impossível ganhar uma luta como essa, contra o melhor do mundo, sozinho, então é importante que tenha um suporte, um time forte. Isso te dá muita força na hora da luta”, agradece, revelando que sua esposa, ao contrário de todos os amantes de MMA do planeta, não assistiu a luta mais importante de sua vida. “Minha esposa nunca assiste minhas lutas, ela sempre vai ao supermercado na hora da luta e eu ligo depois contando como foi (risos)”, revelou, para a risada geral.
REVANCHE PARA FEDOR, SUPER LUTA COM LESNAR?
Campeão da categoria, Alistair Overeem esperava pela vitória de Fedor para defender seu cinturão contra o russo, mas o triunfo de Werdum, velho conhecido do holandês (Werdum já finalizou Overeem no Pride), colocou água no chope do Strikeforce. Quando todos esperavam pelo desafio a Overeem no fim do combate, Werdum repetiu o que havia dito à TATAME antes da luta: “eu venci hoje, mas Fedor é o melhor. Eu gostaria de enfrentá-lo novamente“. Em seu discurso de vitória, que já estava ensaiado dias antes do combate, Werdum incluía uma super luta contra Brock Lesnar, campeão peso pesado do UFC. E agora, alguém duvida?
