Interview with Willamy Freire "Chiquerim"

After successfully defending his Shooto title, the lightweight Williamy “Chiquerim” Freire gave the title back to the organization of the event and signed up a contract with UFC, and already has an opponent chosen for his debut. Chose to confront another Brazilian, Thiago Tavares, Chiquerim talked to TATAME and made it clear what is his goal: to reach the top of the division. Check below an exclusive interview on which he talked about his preparation, analyzed the division and commented about the fight against Thiago “there will be sparkles”.

How are things?

I’m already training hard, making a good work here in Ceará…

You just came back from a fight and Japan and is already training?

Yeah… I didn’t have the time to rest my legs, I arrived and came for the training (laughs).

You fought on Shooto knowing that, in case you win, you would sign with UFC. How are you now?

My time has come, that’s my moment. I’m very excited about it. I’ll have to fight against a Brazilian, but once you’re in the octagon, that doesn’t matter. I’ll do my job and I’m excited. He’s a vet, I’m a debutant, so I’m comfortable. I’m training with a hard team here in Ceará, but I’ll go to Rio to train there too.

Did you have the time to study Thiago’s game?

He has a good ground game, a good Wrestling and a good punch, so let’s see. He said he’s ready to trade punches and so it will happen. I’m sure that people will enjoy watching it a lot… There will be sparkles.

He had some injuries, while you fought twice this year. Do you think this could be a good thing for you?

I’m in a strong rhythm, it’s the best moment on my career. I’ve reached my best, I’m 22 years old and I’m into this fight. He’s experienced, I don’t know if that will make a difference, but I’m feeling good with myself. That’s what matters.

To keep yourself on UFC is harder than getting in… Recently the lightweights Ronys Torres and Rafaello Tractor fought on Ultimate, but were dismissed. Do you worry about that?

Before I signed with UFC I already knew that, it’s win or win. If you don’t make a good show, you’re out. The expectations are high and I’m at my best, in a good shape, with no injuries… I’m coming through a good phase and I’m in a good conditioning, I won two fights in two months and I hope I do a great debut, if God helps be. If God put me on UFC is for some purpose in my life.

How do you see this division?

No comments, this is a really tough division, there’re only really tough guys. I believe I’m on the most disputed divisions, a fast division, with only great guys, and I’m getting in it to reach the top.

Após defender com sucesso seu cinturão no Shooto, o peso leve Willamy Chiquerim devolveu o título à organização nipônica para assinar contrato com o UFC, e já tem adversário definido para a estreia. Escalado contra o compatriota Thiago Tavares, Chiquerim conversou com a TATAME e deixou claro seu objetivo: chegar ao topo da categoria. Confira abaixo a entrevista exclusiva com o cearense, que falou sobre a preparação, analisou a categoria e comentou a luta com Thiago: “vai sair faísca”.

Como estão as coisas?

Já estou treinando forte, dando um gás aqui no Ceará...

Você acabou de voltar de uma luta no Japão e já está treinando?

É... Não tive nem tempo de desinchar as pernas, desci do avião e já vim treinar (risos).

Você lutou no Shooto sabendo que, se vencesse, assinaria com o UFC. Como está a sua cabeça agora?

Chegou a minha hora, o meu momento. Estou amarradão com essa luta. Tem esse negócio de lutar com um compatriota, mas lá em cima não vai ter nada disso. Vou fazer o meu trabalho e estou amarradão. Ele é um veterano, eu sou estreante, mas estou muito à vontade. Estou treinando com uma galera forte aqui no Ceará, mas vou treinar no Rio também.

Você já teve tempo de estudar o jogo do Thiago?

Ele é um cara bom de chão, no Wrestling e tem uma trocação boa, mas vamos ver. Ele disse que está pronto para a trocação, então vamos que vamos. Tenho certeza que o público vai gostar bastante... Vai sair faísca.

Ele teve algumas lesões, enquanto você já lutou duas vezes esse ano. Você acha que isso será um ponto a seu favor nessa luta?

Estou num ritmo forte, estou no melhor momento da minha carreira. Cheguei ao meu ápice, estou com 22 anos e muito afim dessa luta. Ele é um cara experiente, não sei se isso vai influenciar, mas estou muito bem comigo mesmo. Isso que é o importante.

Permanecer no UFC é ainda mais difícil que entrar... Recentemente, os pesos leves Ronys Torres e Rafaello Trator lutaram no Ultimate, mas acabaram demitidos. Você pensa nisso?

Antes de assinar com o UFC eu já sabia disso, é vencer ou vencer. Se você não guerrear vai ser cortado mesmo, vai entrar na faca. A expectativa está muito boa, estou o meu melhor momento, muito bem comigo mesmo, sem lesão... Estou vindo num ritmo bom de luta, já venci duas em dois meses, e espero estrear com o pé direito, e Deus vai me ajudar. Se Deus me colocou no UFC é porque ele tem algum propósito na minha vida.

Como você vê essa categoria?

Sem comentários, essa categoria é muito difícil, só tem fera. Acho que estou numa das categorias mais difíceis, uma categoria rápida, só tem top, e vou entrar para ficar bem e entrar no top.
