Mandarina talks controversial stoppage at BC

Bitetti Combat 7, which happened last Friday in Rio de Janeiro, wass remarkable by great knockouts and submissions, but it was also a stage for a big controversy. On the combat between Cristiano Marcello and the Costa Rican Alejandro Mandarina Solano, the two of them were deliberately trading punches on the second round, but the referee interrupted the fight, giving the win for the Costa Rican. After a lot of complaints, TATAME discovered that the event is thinking about cancelling this result (no contest), what does not make Mandarina happy. “I’d be very disappointed with this cancelation of my win… I’m a professional, MMA is my life, my job, and I take it seriously”, regrets Alejandro, on the quick chat you read here below.

What did you think about the fight?

I thought it was na excellent fight, a great opportunity to be tested. Cristiano Marcello is a great athlete, black belt and an expert in Jiu-Jitsu. I think we had a tied first round, but I think we was a little better, but I was on it. On the second I went there to end the fight and I got the win… I’m glad!

Did you get surprised by Cristiano’s strategy, fighting standing instead of trying to bring you to the ground?

Yes, I have to admit I was indeed surprised.

You two were punching each other a lot when the fight was interrupted. Do you think the referee did right?

I don’t think he got it wrong… Inside the cage, he’s the only one who has a plenty view of everything that is happening there. It’s not my place to say if he got it right or not, but people should accept it.

We had some information saying the event is thinking about changing the result to “no contest”. What do you think about it?

Yes, Fred Fontes, who is my manager, called me last night and said they were analyzing the fight since the controversy was big. I went to Brazil, was convoked at the last minute, didn’t sleep well because the trip was too long, with a scale in Lima (Peru), but I came here and did my job. I’d be very disappointed with this cancelation of my win… I’m a professional, MMA is my life, my job, and I take it seriously. I respect the Brazilian people, I know Cristiano Marcello is a great idol here in Brazil, but here in Costa Rica many cheer for me and would be very disappointed if this new result really is confirmed.

Would you like a rematch against Cristiano?

The one who has to want a rematch is him, I won the fight, I am the champion. If the fight is canceled, there won’t be a rematch, but another fight. I think we would have to put a full stop on this controversy. Here in Costa Rica everyone is talking about it and waiting for their decision.

O Bitetti Combat 7, que aconteceu na última sexta-feira no Rio de Janeiro, foi marcado por grandes nocautes e finalizações, mas também foi palco para uma grande polêmica. No combate entre Cristiano Marcello e o costarriquenho Alejando Mandarina Solano, a trocação estava solta no segundo round, mas o árbitro correu para interromper a luta, dando a vitória para o gringo. Após muita reclamação, existe a possibilidade de alterar o resultado da luta (No Contest), o que desagrada Mandarina. “Ficaria muito desapontado com a anulação da minha vitória... Sou profissional, o MMA é a minha vida, é o meu trabalho, e levo isso muito a sério”, lamenta o gringo, no rápido bate-papo que você confere abaixo.

O que você achou da luta?

Achei uma excelente luta, uma grande oportunidade de ser testado. Cristiano Marcello é um grande atleta, faixa-preta e especialista em Jiu-Jitsu. Acho que fizemos um primeiro round equilibrado, creio que ele levou uma pequena vantagem, mas eu estava bem tranqüilo. No segundo fui para definir e acabei vencendo... Estou muito feliz!

Você se surpreendeu com a estratégia do Cristiano, lutando em pé ao invés de tentar resolver no chão?

Sim, confesso que sim.

Vocês dois estavam numa trocação intensa quando a luta foi interrompida. Você acha que o árbitro acertou?

Eu não acho que o arbitrou errou... Ali no cage somente ele está tento uma boa leitura do que realmente estava acontecendo. Não sou eu que vou dizer se o arbitro acertou ou não, mas cabe a todos acatarem sua decisão.

Recebi informações de que o evento está cogitando mudar o resultado para “no contest”. O que você acha disso?

Sim, Fred Fontes, que é meu manager, me ligou ontem à noite e disse que uma comissão está analisando a luta e que existe uma grande polêmica. Eu penso que fui ao Brasil, em cima da hora, não dormi bem porque a viagem foi muito longa, com escala em Lima (Peru), mas vim aqui e fiz o meu trabalho. Ficaria muito desapontado com a anulação da minha vitória... Sou profissional, o MMA é a minha vida, é o meu trabalho, e levo isso muito a sério. Respeito o povo brasileiro, sei que Cristiano Marcello é um ídolo no Brasil, mas aqui na Costa Rica muitos torcem por mim e ficarão muito desapontados se for realmente confirmado esse novo resultado.

Você quer uma revanche com o Cristiano?

Quem tem que querer é ele, eu venci a luta, sou o campeão. Se a luta for anulada, não terá uma revanche, e sim outra luta. Penso que teríamos que resolver isso de uma vez por todas. Aqui na Costa Rica não se fala em outra coisa e já estão todos apreensivos com o que pode vir a acontecer.
