With over 800 churches on the American continent, Renascer em Cristo (Reborn in Christ) is one of the biggest gospel institutions of Brazil. But the branches of the interior of Sao Paulo, Osasco, have something the others do not. The shepherd Douglas Meira, “Dogão”, of 27 years-old, responsible for the celebrations of the church on the city along with the bishop Kleber Falconi, is a Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai fighter, and decided to bring the martial arts for the Lord’s Table of prayer.
“The first wish of doing these kind of events inside the Renascer was on the beginning of last year”, reminds the shepherd, who did the first MMA event inside Renascer in 2009, and is working on its ninth edition, which will happen next Friday, 23. “MMA is a sport like any other, and why not promote an event like this inside the church? The main focus is to make this event a tool of evangelism, to bring God’s word to a specific audience. Another goal is to show that the church has its doors open to fighters and lovers of the sport”, said, revealing that its next edition will copy the molds used by UFC and its octagon.
The religion invasion on the fights, mainly on MMA, has been a theme of March’s edition of TATAME Magazine. The gumption of the bishop-fighter proves this trend tends to rise more and more. “Nowadays you have a lot of Christian fighters, it’s important for them to know that God bless their work, like on the case of Jorge Michelan, a professional fighter of MMA and member of Renascer em Cristo. In our events, many fighters get there as debutants and quickly join great professional events”, explain Douglas, who already did nine fighting tournaments on the church. “We’ve been successful in all events… The last took place in Osasco with an audience of two thousand people”.
TRAINING, PRAYERS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE TEMPLE
Besides doing MMA, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu and Boxing events, the shepherd reveals that Renascer offers classes for its congregation. “We’ve got a parallel work which is very strong on Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu in some of our churches in Osasco, Mooca, Alphaville, Vila Industrial, among others. There’s the training and then we teach God’s word to our pupils, who are almost 300”, affirmed Douglas, who, soon, will have his athletes competing. “Our work has being growing more and more. We’re federating our team of Jiu-Jitsu, Reborn Team, for the Federation of Jiu-Jitsu of Sao Paulo”.

Igreja adota o MMA como “esporte oficial”

Com mais de 800 igrejas espalhadas pelo continente americano, a Renascer em Cristo é uma das maiores instituições evangélicas do Brasil. Mas as filiais do interior de São Paulo, como a de Osasco, têm algo que as outras não têm. O pastor Douglas Meira, o “Dogão”, de 27 anos, responsável pelas celebrações da igreja da cidade ao lado do bispo Kleber Falconi, é lutador de Jiu-Jitsu e Muay Thai, e resolveu levar as artes marciais para o altar da oração.
“A vontade inicial de fazer esses tipos de evento dentro da igreja Renascer foi no início do ano passado”, relembra o pastor, que realizou o primeiro evento de MMA dentro da Renascer em 2009, e já trabalha para a realização da nona edição na próxima sexta-feira, dia 23. “O MMA é um esporte como qualquer outro, e porque não promover um evento desses dentro da igreja para diversos fins? O foco principal é fazer desse evento uma ferramenta de evangelismo, levar a palavra de Deus a esse público em específico. Outro objetivo é mostrar que a Igreja está de portas abertas para os lutadores e amantes do esporte”, disse, revelando que a próxima edição contará com um octagon nos moldes do utilizado no UFC.
A invasão da religião nas lutas, principalmente no MMA, já foi tema de capa da Revista TATAME de março deste ano. E a iniciativa do pastor-lutador comprova que essa tendência deve aumentar ainda mais. “Hoje em dia muitos lutadores são cristãos, é importante eles saberem que Deus os abençoa em seu trabalho, como é o caso do lutador Jorge Michelan, lutador profissional de MMA e membro da igreja Renascer em Cristo. Em nossos eventos, muitos lutadores entram como estreantes e logo engrenam em eventos de porte profissional”, explica Douglas, que já realizou nove torneios de lutas na Renascer. “Tivemos êxito em todos os eventos... O último foi realizado em Osasco com um público de duas mil pessoas”.
TREINOS, ORAÇÕES E CAMPEONATOS NO TEMPLO
Além de realizar eventos de MMA, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu e Boxe, o pastor revela que a Renascer ainda oferece aulas para os fiéis. “Temos em paralelo um trabalho muito forte de Muay Thai e Jiu-Jitsu em algumas igrejas nossas como em Osasco, Mooca, Alphaville, Vila Industrial, entre outras. Damos o treino e após o término ministramos a palavra de Deus aos alunos, que hoje somam por volta de 300”, afirmou Douglas, que em breve verá os atletas-fiéis competindo. “O trabalho tem crescido a cada dia mais. Estamos federando nossa equipe de Jiu-Jitsu, a Reborn Team pela Federação Paulista de Jiu Jitsu”.
