In May 9 of 2009, Jiu Jitsu met it first international champions. In Abu Dhabi, the elite of the soft art got into action in the search for a piece of the more than 110 thousand “petrodollars”. In the warm up for the second edition of the championship, that will take place in the Arab Emirates, next weekend, TATAME reminds you of everything that happened last year.
Tarsis gets the golden medal and is in TATAME’s cover
The absolute on the Abu Dhabi Pro had names such as Bráulio Estima, Gabriel Vella, Rafael Lovato, Fábio Gurgel and Marcelinho Garcia, but the great name of the event was Tarsis Humphreys. The Alliance’s black-belted wasn’t really noticed before he got to the finale against the favorite Bráulio Estima. And the fight was really exciting!
Tarsis was losing by 2x0 after suffering a sweep and kept trying to do a leg-lock, that gave him a good advantage. Bráulio was punished for a framework. With only five seconds left, Tarsis did another sweep and got two more points, tied the fight and won thanks to two advantages he has gained during the six minutes of the combat. Tarsis got the golden medal on weight, beating Bráulio’s brother, Vitor Estima.
“I’m really happy I won the first absolute world pro. I was sin the beginning of 2008 without fighting, wasn’t really training, I was counting with my technique. But, in 2009, I left the others competitions aside to prepare myself physically and be in a good shape for the Mundial Pro”, said Tarsis at the time, days before he saw his face as the cover of TATAME Magazine #160.
Mendes beats Cobrinha for the first time
Rubens Cobrinha was unachievable as the best featherweight, but the young Rafael Mendes wasn’t intimidated by the three times world champion, who was undefeated for three years. Rafael started with a sweep, but Cobrinha gave him a sweep back. After winning two advantages, Rafael returned to the front of the scoreboard, but right after that Cobrinha tied it (4x4). With 30 seconds left for the end of the fight, Rafael did another sweep and hold it until the end so that he would win for 6x4 and get the golden medal and the check for the title. The classic Mendes vs. Cobrinha was repeated on the World of CBJJ and in ADCC.
In the 75kg category, the final between friends
If it was in another competition, Marcelinho Garcia and Michael Langhi would be side by side on the mat and the judge would declare the winner without the need for the fight. But the rules on the World Pro wouldn’t allow a decision without the fight and that forced the Alliance’s athletes to get into the mat and fight. After a non-scored fight between the two friends, Langhi was declared the winner. “Marcelinho is the best in the world and I use him as a mirror”, said Langhi to TATAME at the time.
Brown belt was the center of attentions on until 95kg category
Rodolfo Vieira is not a surprise in competitions nowadays, but he was when he won the qualifying Brazilian phase with the brown belt and was classified to the World Pro. On Arabic’s mat, Rodolfo shows that his victories on Brazil were deserved. On the semifinal phase, Rodolfo beat the experienced Bráulio Estima on the vantages (2x1) and had a great fight that crowned his participation on the tournament came in a rematch with Antônio Peinado. After winning Batista on the World 2008 and in the qualifying, Rodolfo repeated it with three vantages and the title of first world champion until 95kg.
Alexandre de Souza shines between the heaviest
The black-belted Alexandre de Souza wanted to bring the 7 thousand dollars check home, but it wasn’t easy. Before he got to the finale against Gabriel Vella, the black-belted needed to submit Lucas Sachs. The finale between the two was in a re-edition of the finale of the South American qualifying round, when Alexandre won and got the vacancy. The history has repeated itself, but with a lot more emotion. Alexander began breaking up, making 2-0 with a sweep, and won two vantages. Behind in he score, Vella tied on points with a reversal and then gained an advantage. In the final seconds, Vella risked it all and almost passed the guard of Alexander, but time ran out and Alexander won by an additional advantage.

Aquecimento para o Mundial em Abu Dhabi

No dia 2 de maio de 2009, o Jiu-Jitsu conheceu seus primeiros campeões mundiais. Em Abu Dhabi, a elite da arte suave entrou em ação em busca de uma fatia dos mais de 100 mil “petrodólares” em disputa. No aquecimento para a segunda edição do Mundial, que acontece no próximo final de semana, novamente nos Emirados Árabes, a TATAME relembra tudo o que aconteceu no campeonato, traz as melhores lutas e imagens exclusivas que capturamos no Oriente Médio.
Tarsis leva o ouro e é capa da TATAME
O absoluto do Mundial Pro tinha nomes como Bráulio Estima, Gabriel Vella, Rafael Lovato, Fábio Gurgel e Marcelinho Garcia, mas o grande nome do evento foi Tarsis Humphreys. Faixa-preta da Alliance, o atleta comeu pelas beiradas até chegar à final do absoluto contra o favorito Bráulio Estima. E a luta foi pra lá de emocionante!
Tarsis começou perdendo por 2x0 após sofrer uma raspagem e passou boa parte o tempo tentando encaixar uma leg-lock, que lhe rendeu uma vantagem. Bráulio ainda recebeu uma punição por amarração. Faltando apenas cinco segundos para o final da luta, Tarsis conseguiu aplicar uma raspagem e garantiu dois pontos, empatando o placar e vencendo a luta graças às duas vantagens obtidas durante os seis minutos de combate. Tarsis ainda levou o ouro no peso, batendo o irmão de Bráulio, Vitor Estima.
“Estou muito feliz de ter vencido o primeiro absoluto do mundial profissional. Estava desde o início de 2008 sem lutar, não vinha me preparando muito, estava confiando mais na técnica... Porém, em 2009, deixei as outras competições de lado para me preparar fisicamente e chegar bem para o Mundial”, disse Tarsis na época, dias antes de ver seu rosto estampado na edição #160 da Revista TATAME.
Mendes supera Cobrinha pela primeira vez
Rubens Cobrinha estava intocável como o melhor peso pena da atualidade, mas sofreu um tropeço em seu reinado no primeiro domingo de maio. O jovem Rafael Mendes não se intimidou com o então tricampeão mundial, que não sabia o que era derrota há três anos. Rafael começou com uma raspagem, mas Cobrinha devolveu na mesma moeda.
Depois de conquistar duas vantagens, Rafael voltou à frente ao placar, mas logo em seguida Cobrinha empatou (4x4). Faltando apenas 30 segundos para o final da luta, Rafael conseguiu uma nova raspagem e segurou até o final para vencer por 6x4 e levar o ouro e o cheque pelo título. O clássico Mendes x Cobrinha se repetiu novamente no Mundial da CBJJ e no ADCC.
Final entre amigos até 75kg
Se fosse em outras competições, Marcelinho Garcia e Michael Langhi entrariam lado a lado no tatame e o juiz declararia o vencedor sem a necessidade de lutas. Porém, as regras do Mundial Profissional impedia a decisão sem luta, o que forçou os atletas da Alliance a entrar no tatame e lutar. Após um 0x0 entre amigos, Langhi levou a vitória. “O Marcelinho é o melhor do mundo e eu me espelho muito nele”, disse Langhi à TATAME na época.
Faixa-marrom rouba a cena até 95kg
Rodolfo Vieira não é mais surpresa nas competições hoje, mas ele deixou muita gente de cabelo em pé ao vencer a seletiva brasileira com a faixa marrom na cintura e se classificar para o para o Mundial Profissional. Nos tatames árabes, Rodolfo mostrou que as vitórias no Braasil não foi à toa e foi mais um show à parte.
Na semi, Rodolfo passou pelo experiente Bráulio Estima nas vantagens (2x1), e a grande luta que coroou a participação do faixa-marrom no torneio veio num reencontro com Antônio Peinado. Após vencer Batista no Mundial 2008 e na seletiva, Rodolfo repetiu a dose com trÊs vantagens e o título de primeiro campeão mundial até 95kg.
Alexandre de Souza brilha entre os mais pesados
O faixa-preta Alexandre de Souza queria levar o cheque de US$ 7 mil dólares para casa, mas não teve moleza. Antes de chegar à final contra Gabriel Vella, o faixa-preta precisou finalizar Lucas Sachs. A final entre os dois foi uma reedição da final da seletiva sul-americana, quando Alexandre venceu e conquistou a vaga. A história se repetiu, mas com muito mais emoção.
Alexandre começou partindo para cima, fazendo 2x0 com uma raspagem, e conquistou duas vantagens. Atrás do placar, Vella empatou em pontos com uma inversão e conquistou em seguida uma vantagem. Nos segundos finais, Vella foi para o tudo ou nada e quase passou a guarda de Alexandre, mas o tempo acabou e Alexandre venceu por uma vantagem a mais.
