Gabriel Vella: “I should have trained more”

Champion of the Pan Am of California, Gabriel Vella said “no” to rest and took a plane to Abu Dhabi. His wish was to get one more title and close a perfect week, and he started well the weight finale against Ricardo Demente, but was sweeped on the last minute of fight and got only the second place.

“I’m going to be pretty honest with you, I should have trained more. I haven’t had enough training on Wednesday night, I fought on Thursday. The jetlag got me confused. Demente arrived in the same day as I did, but are small details that end up making a difference, but the thing is he trained more”, tells Vella. “But it wasn’t my mistake; he put me in a good position for him and stabilized. I tried, tried a fall but his kimono slipped from my fingers in the end of the fight, when I was almost there... I tried it all, but he deserved it, it was written”.

The black belt reveals that he got surprised with the sweep on the last 60 seconds of fight. “He did a different sweep, with a different technique. I don’t know if he intended to, but I fell and stayed there for the three seconds. Jiu Jitsu is a detail sport, one day we win, like Friday (on the absolute) and then you can lose”, said, focused in his improvement. “Is the gas for me to keep on working. But I came to fight from my heart, I couldn’t deny an opportunity like this one and I did a good job”.

As for the Worlds of California, Vella expects to be champion again. “This tournament was a good warm up. I started well the year and I’ll keep training I start doing for the World. I’m sure I’ll be more adjusted and that these four minutes made a difference, because I had energy to go for it. But it’s ok, I’m happy, I’ve thought about it and I’m focusing in another one now”, finished the tough guy.

Vella revela: “O que faltou foi treino”

Campeão do Pan-Americano na Califórnia, Gabriel Vella disse “não” ao descanso e pegou o avião rumo a Abu Dhabi. Sua vontade era faturar mais um título e fechar a semana perfeita, e começou bem na final do peso contra Ricardo Demente, mas acabou raspado a um minuto do fim e saiu com a prata.

“Vou ser sincero pra você, o que faltou foi treino. Não tive treino suficiente e cheguei na quarta-feira a noite, lutei na quinta... O fuso horário é puxado. O Demente chegou no mesmo dia que eu, mas são pequenos detalhes que acabam fazendo a diferença, mas o que mais favoreceu foi que o Demente treinou mais”, conta Vella. “Mas não foi detalhe de gás que eu perdi, ele foi feliz em uma posição, estabilizou. Depois eu corri atrás, entrei para dar uma queda e o quimono dele saiu na minha mão no final da luta, quando eu estava jogando ele... Não tinha jeito, eu tentei de tudo, mas era do cara, estava escrito”.

O faixa-preta revela que se surpreendeu com a raspagem nos últimos 60 segundos de luta. “Ele fez uma raspagem diferente, aplicou uma técnica diferente. Não sei ele se planejou, mas eu bati de lado e fiquei os três segundos. O Jiu-Jitsu é decidido no detalhe, um dia a gente ganha, como ontem (sexta, no absoluto), que eu ganhei dele e hoje eu perdi”, disse, focado para dar a volta por cima. “É um combustível para eu continuar trabalhando. Mas vim no coração, não dá pra negar uma oportunidade dessa, e fiz um bom trabalho”.

Quanto ao Mundial da Califórnia, Vella espera o bicampeonato. “Esses campeonatos serviram para começar a dar uma esquentada boa. Eu comecei bem o ano e vou manter o treinamento que eu comecei para o Mundial. Tenho certeza que vou vir mais ajustado e esses quatro minutos fizeram falta, pois eu estava no gás ainda pra buscar. Barral: "There’s no excuse, I did it all right”

World champion of Jiu Jitsu, Rômulo Barral entered there as the favorite for the weight title of the World Pro of Abu Dhabi, which happened on UAE on the last three days. However, Alexandre Ceconi had and spectacular recovery and, with the seconds left for the fight to end, he managed to do a guard sweep and got the title.

“In fight there’s no favorite, there are some names people can point and hope to se a good fighter”, says Barral. “I believe that each championship is different, sometimes you win, sometime you don’t. I wasn’t on my best day, it wasn’t my championship, I didn’t get neither weight or absolute, but I’m happy for the championship, for the new guy that are getting good results. I’d like to congrats Ceconi. Now I’m going to train more for the World and wait to see what will happen”.

Barral is focused on the World of California. And he doesn’t intend to change his preparation for the tournament. “I’ll train the same way I’ve been training. I was working hard, there’s no excuse, I did it all right. I’ll do the same thing for the World, but I’ll try to get there more focused and we’ll see if it’s my turn to be a champion. If it’s not, ok. God knows what He does”, finished the tough guy.

Barral: "Não tem desculpa, fiz tudo certinho”

Campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Rômulo Barral entrou como favorito ao título do peso no Mundial Profissional de Abu Dhabi, que aconteceu nos Emirados Árabes nos últimos três dias. Porém, Alexandre Ceconi conseguiu uma recuperação espetacular e, a dez segundos do final da luta, conseguiu uma passagem de guarda e faturou o título.

“Em luta não existem favoritos, existem alguns nomes que o pessoal espera um bom desempenho”, adianta Barral. “Acredito que cada campeonato é uma coisa, às vezes o cara está ganhando, outra vez não. Eu não estava no meu dia, não era meu campeonato, não levei peso nem absoluto, mas estou feliz pelo campeonato, pelos caras novos que estão chegando. O Ceconi está de parabéns. Vamos trinar mais para o Mundial e ver o que dá lá”.

E o foco de Barral é mesmo o Mundial da Califórnia. E ele não pretende mudar sua preparação para o torneio. “Vou treinar como eu estava treinando. Eu estava treinando duro, não tem desculpa, fiz tudo certinho. Vou fazer a mesma coisa para o Mundial, mas vou entrar mais focado e vamos ver se vai estar na minha hora de ser campeão. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu makes it rain at Abu Dhabi

It was three days of pure action on Abu Dhabi. For the second time, the biggest of the emirates hosts the World Pro Jiu Jitsu, a competition that paid thousands of dollars for the great names of the soft art. And the fights show had a lot of particularities this year.

Sheik Tahnoon, great supporter of the sport, had enough of the tradition and changed the Tribune for the real mat. Watching the fights closely, he was not frightened even when the rain fell in Abu Dhabi. It wasn’t a storm, it is true, but the drizzle that fell in the Arabian Desert was already too strange to those accustomed to almost 365 days per year of sunshine and hot weather.

The rain that fell was good to wash the soul of many people. The weight finals of the black-belts were marked by a revenge. In the dispute for the absolute, Gabriel Vella reached the semifinals with a victory over Ricardo Demente, but the black belt from Nova União hit back on the title of the heaviest, getting a sweep in the final moments of the fight and winning the US$8.000 check.

The same happened with the two female finales. Reissuing the end of the first selective for the South American tournament, Luanna Alzuguir achieved a different outcome over Bia Mosquita. Among the heaviest, Gabi Garcia equaled an old account against Luzia Fernandes, earning the title with a score of 8x2, ensuring the second gold for the Alliance on World Pro.

But the competition wasn’t only marked by revenges. There were surprises on the desert as well, if we still can call names as Cláudio Calasans ans Alexandre Ceconi that way. The fact is that Bráulio Estima and Rômulo Barral were the favorites on their respective weights. Running little by little, Calasans became the great name of the World, beating Bráulio on the weight and absolute finales. World champion, Barral fell before Ceconi, allowing him to pass his guard with 10 seconds left for the fight to end.

On the other categories, the favourites didn’t let any space left for surprises. On the lightest, the brothers Rafael and Guilherme Mendes dominated once again. The final prize was the finale between the brothers, which ended with a 4x2 score in favor of the two times champion Rafael, besides the surprisingly participation on the absolute feather, beating athletes with over 100kg. On this weight category, Gilbert Durinho, another Atos athlete, made a good championship and won the title over Cláudio Caloquinha.

Jiu-Jitsu faz até chover nos Emirados Árabes

Foram três dias de muita ação em Abu Dhabi. Pelo segundo ano consecutivo, o maior dos emirados sedia o Mundial Profissional de Jiu-Jitsu, competição que pagou milhares de dólares aos grandes nomes da arte suave. E o show de lutas teve muitas particularidades este ano.

O Sheik Tahnoon, grande incentivador do esporte, de um chega pra lá na tradição e trocou a tribuna real pelo tatame. Acompanhando as lutas de perto, ele não se assustou nem mesmo quando a chuva caiu em Abu Dhabi. Não foi um temporal, é verdade, mas o chuvisco que caiu no deserto árabe já era estranho demais para quem está acostumado a quase 365 dias por ano de sol e muito calor.

A chuva que caiu serviu para lavar a alma de muita gente. As finais dos pesos na faixa-preta, então, foi marcada por muita revanche. Na disputa do absoluto, Gabriel Vella chegou à semifinal com uma vitória sobreRicardo Demente, mas o faixa-preta da Nova União deu o troco na luta pelo título dos mais pesados, conseguindo uma raspagem nos instantes finais da luta e faturando o cheque de US$ 8 mil.

O mesmo aconteceu nas duas finais do feminino. Reeditando a final da primeira seletiva sul-americana para o torneio, Luanna Alzuguirconseguiu um desfecho diferente sobre Bia Mesquita. Entre as mais pesadas, Gabi Garcia igualou uma conta antiga contra Luzia Fernandes, faturando o título com um placar de 8x2, garantindo o segundo ouro para a Alliance no Mundial Profissional.

Mas a competição não ficou marcada somente pelas “vinganças”. As zebras também apareceram no deserto, se é que podemos chamar nomes como Cláudio Calasans e Alexandre Ceconi de zebras. O fato é que Bráulio Estima e Rômulo Barral eram os grandes favoritos em seus pesos. Comendo pelas beiradas, Calasans se tornou o grande nome do Mundial, batendo Bráulio nas finais do peso e absoluto. Campeão mundial, Barral caiu diante de Ceconi, permitindo uma passagem de guarda a 10 segundos do fim.

Nas outras categorias, os favoritos não deram espaço para surpresas. Nos mais leves, os irmãos Rafael e Guilherme Mendes dominaram mais uma vez. A cereja do bolo foi a final entre irmãos, que terminou em 4x2 a favor do bicampeão Rafael, além de uma surpreendente participação do peso pena no absoluto, batendo atletas com mais de 100kg.

No peso acima, Gilbert Durinho, mais um atleta da Atos, fez bonito e levou o título sobre Cláudio Caloquinha.
