After a first busy day in Long Beach, World of Jiu-Jitsu gets tense on this Thursday. But the main attraction od World will occur this weekend, when the biggest stars of the soft art on the black belt category will fight. Directly from California, TATAME brings you all the news in real time about World, with a special area with the biggest international coverage of the Jiu-Jitsu tournament.
Malfacine is the favorite between the roosters
With the key in hands, we analyzed the confrontations that might happen on World. Starting with the lightest, Bruno Malfacine (Alliance) is very quoted among the roosters, and might confront Felipe Costa (Brasa) on the semifinals. The grand finale can be between him and Caio Terra (Gracie Elite Team), that is is running from the other side of the key, but he will have to beat some really tough guys first.
Guilherme Mendes wants to become two-time champion on the light feather division
The great favorite on the light feather weight division is Guilherme Mendes (Atos), who, despite the complains of Carlos Esquisito, will join the competition (remind here. Pablo Silva, a Gracie Barra’s athlete, is other name which can be one of the highlights on the division, and their meet may happen on the semifinals. On the other key, Samuel Braga (Gracie Barra) and Wellington Megaton (Gracie Humaitá) are strong names for the dispute.
Cobrinha and Rafael may confront each other on the finale
The feather weight is one of the most unpredictable divisions on World 2010. Rubens Cobrinha (Alliance) and Rafael Mendes (Atos) are the promise for the finale, but nobody said it would be easy to get there. Four-time champion of the division, Cobrinha may confront Theodoro Canal (GFTeam), Mário Reis (Gracie Barra) or Gabriel WIllcox (WILLcox BJJ) before the finale.
The other side of the feather weight is also busy. With his eyes on the only title left for his collection, Rafael Mendes also joins the championship and should have hard fights on the semifinals, when he might confront names like Denilson Pimenta (GFTeam) or Marcelino Freitas (Nova União). Caio Almeida, from the new team of Gracie Elite Team, also has a chance.
A very busy light weight division in California
On the division above, Michael Langhi (Alliance) is the current champion and the great favorite for the golden medal, but it would be madness to discard Celsinho Venícius (Gracie Elite Team), Gilberto Durinho (Atos), Lucas Lepro (Alliance), Augusto Tanquinho (Soul Fighters), Rodrigo Caporal (Atos) and Bruno Frazatto (Atos) from this dispute.
The semifinals promises to be exciting, with a possible meeting between Langhi and Durinho. On the quarterfinals, Durinho may have to face the dangerous Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin), an American who wants to become the third non-Brazilian to shine on the black belt category. On the other keys, Celsinho might confront Frazatto on his third fight, on the quarterfinals. It is impossible to predict who will get to the semifinals on the other side of the key: Lepri, Caporal or Tanquinho.
Medium: the most busy division of the World
One of the most disputed divisions of World on the last years, the medium weight has great names on 2010. The current champion, Marcelo Garcia (Alliance) might confront Clark Gracie (Carlson Gracie) on the qualifying phase, while the other vacancy for the quarterfinals can be decided on a fight between Abmar Barbosa (Drysdale JJ), who made a great presentation on this year’s Pan Am, and Murilo Santana (Barbosa JJ).
The great names of the second key are Kayron Gracie (Gracie Barra), another one who shone on Pan Am, and Thiago Alves, from Barbosa. Their confrontation can happen on the qualifying phase. The main attraction of the quarterfinals can be the meeting between Sérgio Moraes (Alliance) and Kron Gracie (Gracie Humaitá), remaking the first fight of Rickson’s son on the black belt, when he was submitted on World 2008.
Whoever wins on this key will have to face tough guys on the semifinals. On the fourth key of the mediums, Claudio Calasans (Atos) appears as the great name after the outstanding performance on World Pro, but Mile Fowler (Lloyd Irvin), Lucas Leites (Chechmat) and Daniel Garcie (Nova União) may make it difficult for the king of Abu Dhabi to follow his way to the title.
Barral has a complicated road on the medium heavy division

Santoro (Cia Paulista), Guto Campos (Atos)... This is the “small” squad that is on the dispute for the title of World 2010. Barral is pointed out as the favorite, but Guto Campos, champion on weight and absolute categories on the European tournament, may appear on the semifinal and make stay in Barral’s way.
Xande is the favorite between the heavies
After equaling himself to Fábio Gurgel, Xande Ribeiro will try to become the first five-time champion on the heavy weight division, but it will not be easy for him. Being the main name of the division, the leader of Jiu-Jitsu’s College, who will compete by Gracie Humaitá, may confront Leo Nogueira (Alliance) on the quarterfinals besides a possible duel with Alexandre de Souza (Gracie Floripa) on the semifinals. The most quoted names to get on the finale on the other key are Bernardo Faria (Alliance), Alexandro Ceconi (Gracie Elite Team) and the non-Brazilian Rafael Lovato (Gracie Humaitá).
Roger is the one on the super heavy
He was perfect on world 2009, submitting all of his opponents on the same way an no one dares to bet against Roger Gracie on this year’s World. After submitting Kevin Randleman on Strikeforce, Gracie has focused again on his Jiu-Jitsu and gets to the competition as the favorite for the weight abd absolute titles. To win on his division, the tough guy has to beat Bruno Bastos (Nova União) on a probable meeting on the semifinals, while Roberto Tussa (Gracie Barra), Ricardo Abreu (Nova União) and Augusto Ferrari (Barbosa) will fight for the other vacancy on the second key.
Pé de Pano comes back to disturb the ultra heavy division
UFC’s former fighter and one of the great names on the mat, Maurício Pé de Pano will come back for the World this weekend, and his arrival promises to disturb even more the heaviest division of the black belt category. One of the most probable confrontations will be the fight against Rodrigo Cavaca (Checkmat) on the quarterfinals, when they will define who will confront the winner between Luiz Felipe Big Mac (Godoi JJ) and Antonio Peinado (Alliance) on one of the semifinals. The other vacancy can be defined by names such as Gabriel Vella (Gracie Elite Team),Roberto Abreu (Carlson Gracie), Roberto Tozi (Godoi JJ), Braga Neto (Evolve Gordo) and Marcio Corleta (Winner).
The female competition promises tied disputes
With a lot of non-Brazilians in action, the female World 2010 is a promise of a golden medal for one of the Brazilians. On the light feather division, the bets are on Letícia Ribeiro (Gracie Humaitá), who might become the champion with only three fights, while Bianca Barreto (Gracie Barra) and Michelle Tavares (Gracie Humaitá) are the great names on the feather weight division.
The light weight division maybe is the hottest one between the girls. Current champion, Luanna Alzuguir (Alliance) might confront the really tough Bia Mesquita (gracie Humaitá) on the semifinals, defining who will be the opponent of the three-time champion of the World Kyra Gracie (Gracie Elite Team), the great favorite on the other key. On the medium, Hillary Willians (West Side) might become the champion with only two wins.
The medium heavy is also busy, with Michelle Nicolini (Checkmat) and Penny Thomas (Gracie Humaitá). Among the heavies, the brown belt Gabi Garcia (Alliance) is the Brazilian bet for the medal, and the finale may happen between her and the very tough Luciana Dias (Gracie Humaitá). The absolute is unpredictable, will all of the great athletes wanting the gold medal.

Após um primeiro dia movimentado em Long Beach, o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2010 esquenta ainda mais nesta quinta-feira. Porém, a grande atração do Mundial será no final de semana, que terá as maiores estrelas da arte suave em ação na faixa preta. Malfacine é o favorito no galo
Com as chaves na mão, analisamos os confrontos que podem pintar no Mundial. Começando pelos mais levinhos, Bruno Malfacine (Alliance) entra de baia no galo, e pode se encontrar com Felipe Costa (Brasa) na semifinal. A grande final pode contra também com Caio Terra (Gracie Elite Team), que entra de baia do outro lado da chave, mas ele terá que passar por muitas pedreiras para chegar á final.
Guilherme Mendes quer o bicampeonato no pluma
O grande favorito do peso pluma é Guilherme Mendes (Atos) que, apesar das reclamações de Carlos Esquisito, entra de baia na competição (relembre aqui). Pablo Silva, da Gracie Barra, é outro que pode chamar a atenção na categoria, e o encontro com Guilherme pode acontecer na semifinal. Na outra chave, Samuel Braga (Gracie Barra) e Wellington Megaton (Gracie Humaitá) são nomes fortes na briga.
Cobrinha e Rafael podem se esbarrar na final

Caio Almeida, da nova equipe Gracie Elite Team, também corre por fora.
Peso leve concorridíssimo na Califórnia
Na categoria acima, Michael Langhi (Alliance) é o atual campeão e o grande favorito para o ouro, mas seria loucura descartar nomes como Celsinho Venícius (Gracie Elite Team), Gilbert Durinho (Atos), Lucas Lepri (Alliance), Augusto Tanquinho (Soul Fighters) ou Bruno Frazatto (Atos) do páreo.
E a semifinal promete ser quente, com o possível encontro entre Langhi e Durinho. Na quarta-de-final, Durinho pode bater de frente com o perigoso americano Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin), que quer se tornar o terceiro gringo a brilhar na faixa-preta. Nas outras chaves, Celsinho entra de baia, mas já pode pegar Frazatto em sua terceira luta, já nas quartas-de-final. Quem chega à semifinal do outro lado é imprevisível apostar: Lepri, Caporal e Tanquinho estão na disputa.
Médio: o peso mais concorrido do Mundial
Uma das categorias mais disputadas do Mundial nos últimos anos, o peso médio está com nomes fortes em 2010. Atual campeão, Marcelinho Garcia (Alliance) pode se esbarrar com Clark Gracie (Carlson Gracie) nas oitavas, enquanto a outra vaga para as quartas deve ser definida entre Abmar Barbosa (Drysdale JJ), que deu show no Pan-Americano deste ano, e Murilo Santana (Barbosa JJ).
Os grandes nomes da segunda chave são Kayron Gracie (Gracie Barra), outro que brilhou no Pan-Americano, e Thiago Alves, da Barbosa: o encontro entre eles pode acontecer nas oitavas da categoria, podendo definir quem pega Alan Finfou (Checkmat) em seguida. Após finalizar Kevin Randleman no Strikeforce, o Gracie volta o foco para o Jiu-Jitsu e chega como favorito ao título no peso e absoluto. Para levar a categoria, o casca-grossa terá que bater Bruno Bastos (Nova União) num provável encontro da semifinal, enquanto Roberto Tussa (Gracie Barra), Ricardo Abreu (Nova União) e Augusto Ferrari (Barbosa) brigam pela outra vaga na segunda chave.
Pé de Pano volta para esquentar o pesadíssimo
Ex-lutador do UFC e um dos grandes nomes do pano, Márcio Pé de Pano voltará ao Mundial neste final de semana, e sua chegada promete esquentar ainda mais a categoria mais pesada da faixa-preta.
