Three-time champion of the World of Jiu-Jitsu and ADCC, Marcelo Garcia is one of the great favorites to the World of Jiu-Jitsu this year, event that will heat California until Sunday. In a chat with TATAME, the black belt from Alliance talked about his expectations for the World, knowing he will get there being considered the favorite to the title.
“I’m very confident in myself (laughs). I want to get to the finale and close up this key”, affirmed Marcelo, betting on his experience as a good thing for him. “I watch closely this division for many years, I fight on the medium weight division since I was 16 and started fighting as an adult, but I don’t see much difference from the previous years. Of course there are new guys, tough ones, but we’ll only know their names on Sunday, when they get to the finale. These will be the ones we will point out and remind as the tough guys… Bu if I try to analyze the whole key, there too much people”, says.
CHAMPION CAN BE DEFINED ON A CHESS MATCH
In 2009, Marcelo made a comeback on World in a triumphal way. Away from the competitions for many years, the black belt closed up the division with a friend Sérgio Moraes, and the title was decided on the odd or even play. This year, in case they get to the finale again, they’ll have a different title dispute. “We have to talk about it, because it seems we’ll get there (laughs)”, jokes Marcelo, betting on the talent of his manager to become four-time champion in California. “My manager plays chess, so we said they’d play a chess match to decide who would be the champion, in case we both get to the finale (laughs)… So maybe he has to play some chess”.
Focused on the tournament, Marcelo had the support of his friends on his last trainings before the World. “It’s been a while since I came here to the United States, it’s hard to train on my own, and this time I had the idea of calling him, since Sergio and me had trained together in Brazil some times and last year we closed it up, so it made our friendship grow”, explains the fighter. “We trained for over a month together, everyday, twice a day, and that only increases my expectations for World 2010”, concluded.

Tricampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu e do ADCC, Marcelinho Garcia é um dos grandes favoritos para o Mundial de Jiu-JItsu deste ano, que agita a Califórnia até domingo. Em conversa com a TATAME, o faixa-preta da Alliance falou sobre as expectativas para o Mundial, sabendo que chega ao campeonato com o rótulo de favorito.
“Eu estou confiante em mim (risos). Quero chegar lá na final e fechar essa chave”, afirmou Marcelinho, apostando na experiência como o diferencial. “Vejo essa categoria de perto há muitos anos, eu luto nos médios desde os meus 16 anos, quando eu passei a lutar como adulto, mas eu não vejo muita diferença dos outros anos. Claro que tem muita gente nova, gente dura, mas a gente só vai descobrir quem são os caras duros mesmo no domingo, quem chegar à final. Esses vão ser os caras que a gente vai lembrar e apontar eles como caras duros... Mas se for parar pra pensar na chave toda, é muita gente”, analisa.
CAMPEÃO PODE SER DEFINIDO NO XADREZ
Em 2009, Marcelinho voltou ao Mundial de maneira triunfal. Afastado da competição por anos, o faixa-preta fechou a categoria com o amigo Serginho Moraes, e ficou com o título no par ou ímpar. Neste ano, caso fechem novamente o peso, eles terão uma disputa diferente. “A gente tem que conversar sobre isso, porque pelo jeito (risos)”, se diverte Marcelinho, apostando no talento do seu empresário para faturar o tetracampeonato na Califórnia. “Meu sócio joga xadrez, então ele combinou com o meu sócio, que se nós dois chegássemos à final, ele jogaria xadrez com o meu sócio (risos)... Então talvez eles tenham que jogar xadrez”.
Focado no torneio, Marcelinho contou com a companhia do amigo nos últimos treinos antes do Mundial. “Faz um tempo que eu vim para os Estados Unidos já, é brabo treinar sozinho, dessa vez tive a ideia de chamá-lo, já que eu e o Serginho já tínhamos treinado juntos no Brasil algumas vezes e ano passado a gente fechou juntos, então isso fez a nossa amizade crescer mais ainda”, explica o lutador. “A gente treinou mais de um mês juntos, todo dia, duas vezes ao dia, e isso só aumenta as minhas expectativas para esse Mundial 2010”, finalizou.
