Rafael Mendes was one of the highlights on World Pro Jiu-Jitsu, which finished few moments ago in Abu Dhabi. Weight champion, “beating” his brother Guilherme, the tough guy tried to go for the absolute, and he wasn’t bad at all.
“I think I started well on the black belt absolute. Submitted my first opponent, and then fought with Big Mac, who is a great athlete... He has the privilege of the weight, maybe next time I can do better”, tell Rafael, who gave up on the absolute so to clear the way for Cláudio Calasans, who ended up champion.
As for the weight, Mendes is celebrating his victory with his family. “Thanks God everything is going my way, we’re closing it all. We did it in the trials and now here we are at the finale and we fought as it was gym training. It was a tough fight, we made it like a big show for the audience. I wouldn’t be nice to define it without an actual fight, so we decided to fight because of everything that is given to us”, tells.
Before coming home, a little shopping in Abu Dhabi. “We’re going to buy some things just so we get home happier and start to administer it properly so we don’t screw it up”, jokes the fighter, who teaches the soft art to Sheik Tahnoon. “I’m glad with all the recognition, that last time I came I’ve have already given some lessons to the Sheik”, tells Rafael, who has never been defeated in Abu Dhabi. “I’m happy, I want to party”.
On the World of California, Rafael is hoping to get his first gold, while his brother wants to be the light feather champion again. “We will fight in different categories so that the team can score more... As for now we’ll keep it that way, later we will fight in the same category again”, says.
Rafael turns the Page, wants to think about another titles and podiums. “I’ll do what I always do, it ended a tournament, I forget it... This one I’ve already forgotten, it was a happy moment, but now I can only think about the World, which will be as tough as this one was. It’s going to be very hard, but I’ll keep on training to maintain my rhythm, to be champion again”, finished the “Abu Dhabi King”.

Rafa: ‘Rei de Abu Dhabi’ brilha mais uma vez

Rafael Mendes foi um dos grandes destaques do Mundial Profissional de Jiu-Jitsu, que acabou há instantes em Abu Dhabi. Campeão do peso, “vencendo” o irmão Guilherme na final, o casca-grossa ainda se aventurou no absoluto, e fez bonito.
“Acho que estreei muito bem no absoluto da faixa-preta. Finalizei a minha primeira luta, depois lutei com o Big Mac, que é um grande atleta... Ele tem o privilegio do peso, quem sabe na próxima vez eu não consigo desenvolver melhor o meu jogo”, conta Rafa, que deixou o absoluto de lado para abrir caminho ao companheiro Cláudio Calasans, que acabou campeão.
Quanto ao peso, o Mendes comemora mais uma vitória em família. “Graças a Deus está dando tudo certo, estamos fechando tudo. Fechamos a seletiva, agora aqui chegamos à final e lutamos como em um treino na academia. Foi uma luta dura, demos um show para o publico. Não seria bom tirar uma luta de uma final, então decidimos lutar por tudo que eles tem proporcionado para nós”, conta.
Antes de voltar para casa, as comprinhas em Abu Dhabi. “Vamos comprar algumas coisinhas só para voltar feliz pra casa, mas administrar o dinheiro certinho para não gastar com besteira”, brinca o lutador, que dará aulas de arte suave ao Sheik Tahnoon. “Fico feliz com o reconhecimento, a outra vez que eu vim aqui já havia dado aulas para o Sheik”, conta Rafa, que jamais perdeu em Abu Dhabi. “Estou feliz, quero é festa”.
No Mundial da Califórnia, Rafael espera faturar seu primeiro ouro, enquanto irmão vai em busca do bicampeonato no pluma. “Vamos em categorias diferentes para que o time some mais pontos... Por enquanto vai continuar assim, mais pra frente a gente vai voltar a lutar na mesma categoria”, adianta.
Rafael já vira a página, quer pensar em mais títulos, mais pódios. “Vou fazer o que eu sempre faço, acabou um campeonato eu esqueço... Esse daqui eu já esqueci, foi o momento de felicidade, mas agora só penso no Mundial, que vai ser tão duro quanto esse. O Mundial é muito difícil, mas vou continuar o treino para seguir no mesmo ritmo, finalizando, para ser campeão de novo”, finalizou o “Rei de Abu Dhabi”.
